Triangle Model Yacht Club Regatta , May 19-20.

By Carl Olbrich, Race Director.

The weather for this regatta could not have been better.

Friday afternoon we had clear skies and winds from the WNW generally 5-8 MPH.

Temperature during the day was in the mid 70s.

The same weather pattern held for the next 2 days of racing and once the skippers learned the 2 ½ lap course it was repeated for 30 races with a few shortened race exceptions.

Friday afternoon was a tune up session with a barbeque at the lake starting at 6:30 PM.

Doug Hale organized the cook out and brought his famous barbeque while other club members supplied the drinks, hot dogs, hamburgers, salads etc.

With the sun going down and the lake becoming calm the sailing stories became better and it was a great beginning to the regatta.

Saturday morning we had 12 skippers on the starting line for the first race.

Everybody had tuned their boats and they were ready to be competitive.

However, it took until the 7th race for Rick Hawley to finally finish ahead of Gerry Cobley. Gerry came in 2nd. The following 8th race Gerry was dismasted by a port boat.

The dismasting must have broken the winning cycle as Gerry only scored one more 1st the rest of the day.

Saturday completed 20 races with Gerry Cobley leading followed by Chris Kakavas and Skip Allen just behind Chris.

Dinner Saturday evening was at Bentleys with excellent food and a very tired sailing group.

Sunday there were 10 starting boats.

Chris Kakavas and Skip Allen were able to cut into Gerrys lead for a period of time but they were not able to catch Gerry.

We had a good number of skippers scoring bullets.

Gerry 11, Chris 5, Skip 5, Rick 4, Bob 3 and Scott 2.

The last race was started a few minutes before noon and the presentations and awards were over by 12:30.

All regatta participants received a mug with pictures of 2 – EC-12s and 1st  within the small wording, (sailing  1st  then work).

The first 5 skippers received trophies made out of clear acrylic, will stand alone and are inscribed. First place was also mounted on a granite base.
