Three in a Row
By Francis Angel
For
the third year in a row the 17 EC-12 Meter Captains attending the
Twenty-third Annual Century Cup Regatta held on June 19/20, 2004 by The
Piedmont Model Yacht Club at Elon, NC were blessed with good weather and
enough wind to race 28 heats. The 2 fleet promotion relegation heat system
was used. Each captain sailed in 2 seeding heats and at least 12 fleet
heats. Their best finish in the seeding heats was carried forward and one
addition throw out for the fleet heats was allowed. King of the bubble was
Joe Cole, who raced in 19 heats.
Rick Gerry was in a class by himself. Rick posted 9 first place finishes
in his 14 heats. If this were baseball, Rick would’ve batted 643. Chris
Kakavas put forth a valiant effort but was unable to close on the leader.
Dick Gerry, Rick’s dad, also sailed very well. I wonder who has been giving
lessons and to whom. John Bottensek, Joe Walter and Bob Mersereau were
locked in three-way struggle for the two remaining trophies when Bottensek
scored his 2 bullets in the last two heats to lock up forth place. Walter
had a four point lead Sunday morning and managed to hold on to finish 3
points ahead of Mersereau.
In addition to the 5 trophies presented, a special award consisting of an
advance complementary copy of "Virtual Skipper 3" provided by Digital
Jesters and obtained by Tim Brown of our sister club in Raleigh, NC. The
computer simulation game was awarded to Jim Utley as the skipper most likely
to improve his finishes with some practice on tactics.
The Century Cup was round four of the "Dixie Cup Series". The complete
list of standings can be seen at

Photos of the event can soon be seen on the EC-12 Building Page.

I’d like to thank my staff, Cameron Hunt, Chris Mortimore, Dan Scudder
and the light of my life, my wonderful wife Linda, who kept us fed and
watered. Thanks to Chris Kakavas who placed the marks on the lake, we had a
course to race around. And finally, a big thank you to the skippers who
helped us set up and stayed to help load all the regatta stuff at the
conclusion of racing.
All in all, excluding Rick Gerry’s outstanding performance the fleet was
very close with only a very few points separating most of the finishing
positions as the scores below reflect.
