Naples New Year Regatta - Jan 11th&12th

Postby hedderick » Wed Nov 27, 2013 9:09 pm

The Naples Model Yacht Club is getting the final details ready for the annual New Year Regatta, January 11th and 12th. A Special Hotel Room rate is available for $75 (Breakfast Included). Bud Cassidy will be the RD. Dinner has been arranged at a local restaurant.

The first SPY PHOTO has been acquired of the NMYC members test sailing their new lake(see attachment). From this helicopter shot it appears upwind legs of 125+ yards are easily achieved. Parking is right by the lake. And there is a path all the way around.

Be one of the first to sail this new venue! Sign up now by going to: http://www.floridaec12.com
Click on Regattas. Click "online entry" to register with your credit card.

This is going to be the largest regatta we have had in some time with 33 skippers attending! The P&R fleet management system will be used. The initial A Fleet and B Fleet assignments have been made using the National Seeding List. The fleet assignments may be found at:

Hey Dick, Thanks for all you've done--The pond looks great, the fleet size is invigorating, and I'm delighted to have some excellent women skippers to trade tacks with. Just one more thing...could you post directions to the new pond here. See you bright and early Saturday...by the way, please bring some sunshine...it is suppose to get down to 17 degrees in Tallahassee tonight!! Brrrrrrrenda P

Bud Cassidy and company did a great job running this regatta. I am sorry to say that this was Bud's last time running a regatta. He is one of the best organized and thoughtful RDs we have had in the class. He sets great courses and keeps the action going. Enjoy your retirement from race directing Bud, but please keep coming out to the lake to sail with us.

This was a brand new venue for Naples and the locals had no advantage in local knowledge yet. It is a small lake, but it has great facilities and the parking was at the waters edge. I mean right at the edge, we barely had enough room to walk the shore between the water the lifted tail gates. The weather could not have been any better. I jokingly complained about the lack of a single cloud in the sky. A lot of money had been spent on this lake by the City. It points out the need for us to really work at getting in contact with City Planners to get into their heads that the shape of the lake can really improve its use by sailors. The shape of this lake meant that we had longer walks around the out side, while our boats sailed the short length through the middle of the lake. Had a model sailor had a chance to talk with the planners, they might have made an L shaped lake that could have provided for great courses and easy walking to follow the boats. It would not have cost the City one penny more to build a lake of the same size with just a little different shape.

I encourage clubs to try to meet with City Planners if only to say, we are here, we are clean, and we attract people to the pond. If you make these small changes to your plans, it will make it even better for all.

That said, it was a very good regatta and a lot of fun to sail. Thanks Dick and all the Naples club for hosting. Great Job!

I could not help but notice the veritable plethora of DNFs and DNSs in race 7 and some in race 6 as well. What was that all about? :D
Could something have been done to head that off? Not trying to cause trouble. Just asking for future reference. My guess is that racers need to be prepared for whatever comes their way, and let the chips fall as they will.

It is not as troubling as you might think Scott. Most set up their spots along the south and west sides of the lake. The racing began on the west side. After lunch the racing moved to the north side of the lake and some communications were lost when tired skippers decided not to make the walk from where they launched their boat all the way around to where the start was. One guy was in the bathroom at the time and missed the start. As for the DNFs, there was one or more who should have changed their batteries a little sooner. Jack Ward was actually winning race 7, when his rig gave way on the final downwind. Nobody was near him and there was never any contact. Something just let go. We were all shocked when it happened. Jon Luscomb had his rudder arm come loose below deck. Oh, and Jim Kelly had a pop-up tent blow over and crush his rig while on the shore, that took some time to fix. The tent was rescued out of the lake.

Ain't it the truth-but you gotta admit he is sailing clean and doing great.
Maybe we need to retire and follow our advice to "Newbees" and exercise our thumbs more.
Bravo Zulu Alan :You sailed a spectacular regatta.
Joe;you sailed wonderfully-you should have reeled him in!
