Day 2 of the Thunder Mug was started out the same. Sunny skies, northerly breezes around 5kts with some right shifts. We set for Northerly and then chased it East with one move and then back again. Ugh! That said, Sunday was the better of the two days. Nearly everyone had a turn at the front picking their way through the shifts and lulls. Despite the wind issues, we all had a great time. Ten boats is a good number, no real pressure and if someone has a tune or batter issue, we waited.
The quality of the racing is what struck me. The fleet was very cordial toward each other and circles were done often before the offending skipper was asked to. Sailing was very close and very tactical. Saw some major flyers pay off and some that did not.
We had a few new comers as well as a few EC12 Skippers who had taken a leave and returned. David Dellenbaugh did very well with his best finish in an EC12 Regatta for day 1. He was not able to join us for day 2 so his score shot up with DNS's for Sundays races. Brian Kerrigan has a boat on order with RMD and was sailing Bob Greers New England boat 1689. He quickly figured out the boat and was up front both days. Brian Jobson, who took a year or two break did well enough to snatch second place which was his first ever Trophy in the EC12 Class.
The Thunder Mug also completes our New England Cup Series points and this year the lead changed twice. Chuck Luscomb was ahead going into Mystic but with poor showing allowed Al Dion, who placed 2nd, to take the points lead going into the Thunder Mug. The point spread was 10 points which meant it a walk in the park for Al to retain the New England Cup title for the second year in a row. All he had to do was show up. Well, he did not do that which allowed Luscomb the points needed to take the top position for 2013.
We were able to complete 13 races on Sunday for a total of 22 for the regatta and here is how the points fell.
1 Chuck Luscomb CT 30pts
2 Brian Jobson CT 70pts
3 Brian Kerrigan CT 75pts
