2013 Thunder Mug Regatta Killingworth, CT

Postby Chuck Luscomb » Mon Sep 09, 2013 12:55 pm

Hi All,

We are fast approaching the 2013 Thunder Mug here in Killingworth CT. This is usually a locals event but we have been seeing a number of R2 Guys making the trip to our events. Not sure if they think we are push over’s or whether they like our company or the events we run or what but it is sure nice having them make the trip up here. Funny how only a few years ago, I was driving to MD because there was only one regular EC12 event in R1 which was Stowe. Humm.

We will be once again hosting at Venuttis Pond in Killingworth. It is a great site with a mixed bag of conditions and worth the drive. This time of year we get some pretty breezy conditions which can make this site very exciting. A few years ago, we had steady 20kts out of the SSE. Now that was fun. If you do come, bring boots and some kind of tent/cover as we will be sailing unless it borders on ridiculous.

NOR and Entry is posted on the Regatta Schedule page here: http://www.ec12.org/Regattas/Regatta-Schedule.htm

Here is a view of the site for those who may have never sailed here. Good fun.

All,

Just getting a peak at the forecast for next weekend. The fall breezes are looking like they will not dissappoint. 15-25kts SSW. Perfect direction for this pond. Bring your B rigs boys. C Rigs if you are betting on a blow out.

Are bildge pumps class legal?

Skippers list above is updated as of today. Don't miss the last event in Region 1 and the chance at some practice before High Point!

In typical New England fashion...

The weather just aint going to do what they say it will. As of this morning, 5-10 starting NE and swining to the ESE as things heat up both days. Hopfully this shift will occur at lunch time...

Have a good turn out for this event as we are usually under 10 boats for this tail end charlie event. Most are either on their way South or making preparations for that. Most are locals who simply can't get enough of New England weather. Snow, rain, sleet... Yuck. Going to ship a boat to FL so all I have to do is Jump on a plane for the week end. Ha!

Day 1 of the Thundermug is now in the books.

10 boats on the start line this morning to a perfect Northerly with a few shifts but pretty consistent. Set our marks and got things under way. Well, after about 4 races, the wheels came off the wagon. The breeze died to nothing while we took our lunch break and then came up again out of the East. It stayed out of the East long enough for us to think it might stay so we moved the race course. No sooner did we do that and it went back out of the North. It stayed and stayed and stayed so we moved back again. Guess what it did then? Yup, you guessed back East again. SO we decided to stop moving the course and sail what we had. We got 5 more races in by the end of the day in very light and shifty conditions.

So after day one, the results looked like this.

1 Chuck Luscomb 11 pts
2 David Dellenbaugh 27pts (will not sail Sunday)
3 Brian Jobson 30pts
4 Brian Kerrigan 33pts
5 Ken Shaw 37pts
6 Eddie Wolfe 42pts
7 Tim Stone 47pts
8 Bob Shluger 51pts
9 Jack Baldwin 56pts
10 Jon Pelly 70pts
11 Al Dion 84pts (Did not sail Saturday)

The forecast for day 2 is more of the same. Hopefully the wind will behave a bit more than it did today.

Day 2 of the Thunder Mug was started out the same. Sunny skies, northerly breezes around 5kts with some right shifts. We set for Northerly and then chased it East with one move and then back again. Ugh! That said, Sunday was the better of the two days. Nearly everyone had a turn at the front picking their way through the shifts and lulls. Despite the wind issues, we all had a great time. Ten boats is a good number, no real pressure and if someone has a tune or batter issue, we waited.

The quality of the racing is what struck me. The fleet was very cordial toward each other and circles were done often before the offending skipper was asked to. Sailing was very close and very tactical. Saw some major flyers pay off and some that did not.

We had a few new comers as well as a few EC12 Skippers who had taken a leave and returned. David Dellenbaugh did very well with his best finish in an EC12 Regatta for day 1. He was not able to join us for day 2 so his score shot up with DNS's for Sundays races. Brian Kerrigan has a boat on order with RMD and was sailing Bob Greers New England boat 1689. He quickly figured out the boat and was up front both days. Brian Jobson, who took a year or two break did well enough to snatch second place which was his first ever Trophy in the EC12 Class.

The Thunder Mug also completes our New England Cup Series points and this year the lead changed twice. Chuck Luscomb was ahead going into Mystic but with poor showing allowed Al Dion, who placed 2nd, to take the points lead going into the Thunder Mug. The point spread was 10 points which meant it a walk in the park for Al to retain the New England Cup title for the second year in a row. All he had to do was show up. Well, he did not do that which allowed Luscomb the points needed to take the top position for 2013.

We were able to complete 13 races on Sunday for a total of 22 for the regatta and here is how the points fell.

1 Chuck Luscomb CT 30pts
2 Brian Jobson CT 70pts
3 Brian Kerrigan CT 75pts
4 Ken Shaw VT 84pra
5 Eddie Wolfe MA 89pts
6 Tim Stone VT 92pts
7 Bob Shluger CT 102pts
8 Jack Baldwin CT125pts
9 Jon Pelly CT 158pts
10 David Dellenbaugh 160pts (Did not sail on Sunday)

Thanks to our RD Bill Dempsey for all his help and support hosting this event as well as Ron Rhault who helped with scores and line calling on Sunday. Thanks also to Amanda Baldwin for bringing pizzas on Sunday and Jack Baldwin for the use of his mark boat and motor.

Skippers from left to right...Jon Pelly, Tim Stone, Brian Jobson, Chuck Luscomb, Ken Shaw, Brian Kerrigan, Eddie Wolfe and Jack Baldwin.
