MYSTIC RACE WEEK 2011
Aug 11th-14th
Mystic Seaport, Mystic CT
J Class National Championships
Well, the first day of racing at Mystic with the J boats was nothing short of spectacular. The wind settled on SSW after some pretty large shifts and then built well into the low and middle teens by 3pm. Lots and lots of photos were taken so there will be plenty to share.
These boats are truly amazing. They are so powerful and gracful and when you have 8-9 boats on the line being driven by skilled helmsman, it is a sight to see. These guys are not afraid to get close to each other and mix it up.
After 6 races, the top three look like this.
1-Ramos/Luscomb
2-Brawner
3-Reno
Still lots in store for tomorrow and it looks like it will be another great day at Mystic.
Day 2 had the winds out of the West most of the time with some huge shifts that would hold long enough to get you thinking about a course change and then they would swing back. Speeds ranged in the 5-8kt range with some long periods of 10-13kts. The sun was shining bright and there were very few clouds in the skys. The courses were not as good as Thursday but they worked.
A total of 20 races were completed to finish this event. The fleet dwindled down into the single digits and the fleet was combined into one.
The finish positions are as follows
1-Ramos/Luscomb Shamrock 26pts
2-Dave Brawner Shamrock 39pts
3-Eric Reno Endeavor II 54pts
4-Kevin MacLellan Shamrock 74pts
5-Gerhard Kelter Ranger 91pts
6-Mark Fleckenstein Shamrock 100pts
7-Nick Mortgu Shamrock 119pts
8-Biff Martin Endeavor 149pts
9-Gary Mueller Ranger 152
10-Rob Hill Ranger 163
11-Colin Mosgrove Shamrock 174
12-John ODell Endeavour 174
13-Rick West Shamrock 179 (DNC on Sunday)
Ramos and Luscomb shared the boat swaping racing on Thursday. Ramos returned to Annapolis on Thursday night to attend a parents weekend at the Naval Acadamy so Luscomb completed the event solo on Friday. Unique to the J Class is the ability to have more than one skipper. The scoring follows the boat, not the skipper.
Full report to be filed shortly...
EC 12 Region 1 Championships
Day 3 of Mystic had the EC12s taking to the water. 14 races were completed with an unsettled SSW wind that kept the lead changing. 16 boats on the line made for some interesting mark roundings as the fleet stayed pretty compact.
The top 3 at the conclusion of racing were...
1-Bruce Walton
2-Chuck Poindexter
3-Chuck Luscomb
The final day of racing was a complete wash out. A drenching rain populated the Doppler Radar in Mystic and on most everyones cell phones. That was the bad news. The good news was that no one was very upset about not sailing in the rain and most were thrilled to get an early start home. Scores were tallied after 14 races WITH 2 throw outs and the final scoring looked like this. Congradulations to Bruce Walton for sailing an excellent regatta.
1-Bruce Walton 34pts
2-Chuck Luscomb 42pts
3-Chuck Poindexter 45pts
4-Rick West 60.6pts
5-Jake Leo 72pts
6-Al Dion 74pts
7-Kevin MacLellan 78pts
8-John Bottensek 79.4pts
9-Bob Greer 86pts
10-Dave Branning 91pts
11-Phil Tonks 95pts
12-Gib Losel 115pts
13-Tim Stone 133pts
14-Nick Mortgu 145pts
15-John Skerry 157pts
16-Ken Koehler 180pts
Thank you to all who made the trip to Mystic this year and made it an excellent regatta.
