What a day!! It was warm and dry with a nice light breeze at Laurel Acres. While we thought the late round of entries that brought the field up to 28 was the surprise, the real surprise was Tim Stone and his 18 point lead over last minute entry, 2015 national champion Sean Fiddler. After missing the seeding heats completing repairs that should have been done over the winter, Tim immediately climbed his way out of B fleet and proceeded with 5 bullets, two seconds and a third before lunch.

The nice weather allowed us to sail from 9:30 to 4:30. After 24 races, the standings are:

1 Tim Stone 29
2 Sean Fiddler 47
3 Skip Hall 49
5 Mark Rinehart 52
6 Dave Ramos 55
7 Jamey Betz 58

Tomorrow’s weather looks like another hot one for a good day of racing. Keep in mind that none of the above story is real as today is April 1.

It turns out that Laurel Acres pond has some compassion. Unknown to us prior to the 45th Liberty Bell regatta, this would be Rick West’s last scheduled visit to Laurel Acres Park. In his last race on the pond that frustrates many, the Poobah crossed the finish line ahead of the fleet by ¾ of a leg. Rick, thank you for coming so often and for so long. Your effort on behalf of the class is nothing short of amazing.

When you consider that Rick drove from Pacifica, CA for the regatta, it makes Jerry Franko’s feat of showing up to sail within 24 hours of rain storm look less impressive. Nonetheless, Jerry was there when it was damp and chilly.

The breeze was coming out of the NNW all weekend. This is just a bit to the right of perfect, which meant there were some wild lifts, headers, puffs and dead spots at the most inopportune times. Even though it could be frustrating, the skippers were smart enough not to complain. We had breeze and that is not always a given in Mount Laurel.

The start line was off the point with the weather marks up towards the parking lot and the leeward marks just outside the cove. We got in 22 long 2.5 lap races over the two days thanks to decent conditions and a cooperative fleet.

You’ve heard this story before. In the end, it was Dave, Jamey and Mark in that order. See, you don’t even need the last names, which is why we didn’t even bother to take pictures of them getting their trophies. There are plenty of those shots already.

Mr. Joseph Cole was participating in this regatta for the 34th time! Dominic Bonanno got what we believe to be his first Liberty Bell bullet in the second race on Saturday. Welcome back Cape May Ray, who has returned from serious health issues and sailed the entire event with his patented smile.

As RD, I am very fortunate to get to work with Nick Mortgu and Skip Hall, who handled all the finishes and scoring. Nick and Beth took care of all the details for lunch. A special thank you to Lisa for hosting the dinner at our house on Saturday and baking enough treats for all the skippers and most of the people in the park.

Thanks to all the skippers for making this so much fun. Next up is our return trip to State College. Fred, here we come!

Congratulations Dave Ramos. Unless this is a late April Fools joke again.
