2016 Tilghman Regatta

Postby Dave_Branning » Tue Feb 23, 2016 5:07 pm

No Tilghman Trifecta this year but the annual EC12 portion is ready to go in September again...and it's only February. We are buttoned up and eager for the season to kick start with the Liberty Bell in two months. So, thinking ahead, here's the scoop on the Tilghman EC12 Regatta. It would be wise to show up here...the NCR in Oxford, MD is 5 miles away as the crow flies in similar conditions one month later. They don't call it the Choptank River for nothing. Just sayin'

Attention! Attention! I know you are all glued to the RNC and awaiting the exciting DNC but let's get our priorities straight.
The Tilghman EC12 Regatta, September 10-11, is ready for your registration. We have a renovated swimming pool at the clubhouse! It's the third leg of the Colonial Cup series! It's open water! It's fast approaching? Link to register is in the post above. Get 'r done!

So far: Fred DeSantis (remember him?); Roger Baldwin and Jim Flach are registered and itching to compete. Where are the others?

Measurement News: For those in the local area, we will measure boats after sailing Saturday, September 10th at the Tilghman EC12 Regatta. The purpose is to clear boats for the National Championship Regatta held the following month in Oxford, MD. We want to make sure all Mid-Atlantic skippers, who want to race the NCR in local waters, have a clear path to make sure their boats conform with a valid certificate. Skip Hall will chair the measurement process and will have lots of help.
Let me know if you want to schedule your boat to be measured.

Guys: Looking forward to a great fleet racing weekend at Tilghman on Chesapeake YC and Marina.

Last minute update:

We have 18 boats and I am your PRO with Elaine as scorekeeper and all around valuable helper. Roger Baldwin will sail, but he is graciously bringing Scout the outboard for chase boat duty and buoy placement. Be prepared to go chase your boat with this outboard as I do not have a driver for Saturday. I do have Bobby Lippincott to help on Sunday.

Watch your speed in St. Michaels. [8D]

If you beat me there, The code to the YC and Marina gate is 2161 (key pad is to the left and just before the gate. Clubhouse locker room code is 543. You need two hands.....one to turn the latch after entering the code and one to open the door. Dockmaster Ron will be on site at 9:30am.

It will be hot....suggest bringing that little cooler you have in the garage filled with your favorite ice cold beverage. We will have water and gatorade until it runs out. You can buy ice from Dockmaster Ron if you need more.

GPS ADDRESS IS: 21610 Island Club Rd, Tilghman, MD 21671

TILGHMAN DAY ONE

Mother Nature gave us terrific 10-15 SW winds so the RC posted 13 long windward leeward courses along the jetty. Never had to move a mark as we realed off 7 races before lunch (in the air conditioned clubhouse) and 6 after lunch. Thanks to Skip Hall and Bob Roe for making my day so easy as they scored races and chased boats all day. Elaine Hepkin gave us a great lunch and will do it again tomorrow in cooler temperatures and a big shift in wind direction.
Here's the top six results for 15 boats (we had few no shows): No throw outs calculated.

Jamey Betz 33
Mark Rinehart 42
Danny Thomas 48.3
Dave Ramos 70
Harry Mote 74
Jim Flach 76

TILGHMAN DAY TWO:
After a great breakfast at Two If by Sea in Tilghman, the surviving fleet welcomed a fresh north-west breeze. Roger Baldwin and Jim Flach efficiently placed the buoys in snappy fashion and we were underway. A few no shows from yesterday and two additional boat problems reduced the 15 boat fleet to 13 for the start of the day.

Jamey, Mark and Danny kept Dave Ramos in their wake for the first set of three. Then the B sails were deployed and Mark goes 1, 1, 2, while Dave Ramos shouldered his way into the mix to keep the top four very interesting. After the great lunch served up by Elaine Hepkin we emerged from the yacht club with a 15 degree northerly shift and honkin’ wind pressure. Hmm.....”Isn’t today an NFL game day?” And so the day’s sailing was shut down. We totaled 19 races with three throw outs for the two days.

Congrats to Mark Rinehart for a one point win over Jamey Betz with Danny Thomas besting Dave Ramos for third. Kudos to Jim Flach. Scott Graf, Fred DeSantis and Harry Mote, each just off the pace, but scored several races in the top five to keep improving in this fleet.

Thanks to Roger Baldwin (the best partner a regatta could have) who brought his outboard from Easton by water to do the buoys with Bob Roe (“Mr. Enthusiasm” who did anything needed to help on Saturday) and Jim Flach, our Sunday buoy assistant. Thanks to Elaine Hepkin, who makes the presentation of our breaks so first class and to Skip Hall (professional race assistant). What a great team. Now it’s on to the Annapolis Regatta, our last leg of the Colonial Cup, in three weeks on a huge private pond east of the Bay Bridge. Come join us.

TILGHMAN FOLLOWUP:

A few followup notes to the weekend:

1. Jim Flach and Bob Roe took some pictures. Bob from the chase boat and Jim, when not sailing shot the on-shore activity. Here's Jim's great pics.
https://regatta.smugmug.com/2016-EC12-Tilghman-Regatta/

2. One of Jim's pictures shows a Tilghman Fire Department 9/11 Memorial Event in Dogwood Harbor just to the left of our racing venue. We had moment of silence Sunday for the 9/11 victims.

3. The weekend was not without some raucous social frivolity. We had a spontaneous dinner at Town Dock in St Michaels on Friday night and a group dinner at The Chesapeake House on the Tilghman Road on Saturday night. The Region 2 EC12 group knows how to turn a regatta weekend into a three ring circus. If Brawner was here, he would have probably organized some sky diving.

4. You will see in the pictures some boat measuring activity. After racing on Saturday, Harry Mote and Cape May Ray had their boats thoroughly measured by a blue ribbon experienced team. Luckily this was accomplished without any Tred Avon Sunset consumption. They both passed the tests.
