Mystic Race Week R1 Championships

Postby Chuck Luscomb » Fri Jun 26, 2015 10:30 pm

Good evening everyone!

Mystic is fast approaching and in the last few years, we have seen the attendance at this event grow each year. Last year, we hosted the Star 45 National Championships on Thursday and Friday. This year, we will host the R1 J Class Championships on Friday Aug 7th. Mystic is one of the original locations that the J Class calls home and is synonymous with J Class racing.

Our Region 1 EC12 Championships will be held on Saturday and Sunday Aug 8th and 9th. This is our third stop on the New England Cup Series and one of the nicest locations to host an event like this. Mystic Seaport has been our host since 2009 and each year they roll out the red carpet for us. On line entry is now open and we are already seeing entries roll in.

If you have never been to Mystic, you truly are missing out. From our Friday Night River Cruise aboard the Sabino, to the newly re launched Charles W. Morgan, there is so much to see and do here. Won't you join us?

As a reminder to the boys from NY and NJ and MD and DE and PA....Mystic is one of our scheduled Colonial Cup events. We scheduled five events this year for the Colonial Cub qualifying and we count four. We are losing a few hot shots to the Santa Barbara Nationals...so that leaves the pickings a little easier for the rest of us.
So I ask that all you EC12 skippers from the Mid Atlantic Area (Region 2) to get cracking and pack it up next week and head North. We had 19 boats at Mt Laurel in June for a few club races on a Sunday. How come we have three from there coming to Mystic? Quite frankly I make sure this one is a "must make" every year when planning the schedule. This is a great venue in a great town with great people . Hope to see more of you there. Cheers :)

Well that was fun...

Three beautiful days in Mystic CT sailing two classes with some of the best personalities in our class? Awesome.

The J Class and EC12 Class Regional Championships are now finished. All three days were beautiful weather wise. Not a ton of breeze on Friday or Saturday but Sunday... Oh my, Sunday was most likely one of the best days of sailing at the Seaport I have seen. The breeze was a solid NNW with some consistent righties and lefties in there to keep you on your toes. Cool, comfortable and just plain fun sailing. We had 15 Skippers from all over R1, some from R2 and 1 from R7. Nice turn out.

Friday

The J Class R1 saw some what of a low turn out due to some of our regulars were out West in San Diego showing those guys how to do it. But even so, we had 8 boats registered for this event going into the weekend and 6 actually showed up. Most of the Classes top boats were well represented with Ranger, Endeavour and Shamrock. The dark horse was Yankee. Built out of wood by Ned Lakeman more than 15 years ago, this boat has shown its speed by winning at Stowe but had no real reason to continue that trend with the likes of the skippers and boats that registered for this event. Kevin MacLellan was the favorite with his Shamrock. Well tuned and ready to win. Skip Hall was also ready with his Shamrock. Personally, I have never seen a better tuned J boat than Skips. As the racing got underway, it looked like Yankee had the speed and agility to make it two in a row. After 12 races, the final results looked like this...

1 Yankee Chuck Luscomb 15pts
2 Shamrock Kevin MacLellan 23pts
3 Ranger Brian Kerrigan, Jon Pelley 30pts
4 Endeavour Tim Stone, Phil Tonks 30pts
5 Shamrock Skip Hall, Rodger Baldwin 41pts
6 Shamrock Rob Hill (Retired) 50pts

Gary Mueller Registered on line but did not show (hope he is OK!) We assumed he would bring his trailer and his spare boat and listed them above. Biff Martin Called me Friday to let me know he was not coming.

Thanks to Victor Oberg for jumping in as RD and Al Dion and Ron Rhault for being crash boat.

EC12 R1 Championships

We were able to complete 20 races over two days. Sunday saw breezes in the low to mid teens with a few higher gusts so all were sporting B rigs right from the start. What ever momentum Luscomb had coming off of Friday, he carried through on the weekend. Saturday, his worst score was a 2nd. That was even hard for him to believe. Also in the hunt was Al Dion whos boat was just plain going. Dave Branning with his new boat was also in there. Yes, the rumors are true. The Jersey Tomato has been passed along to another worthy skipper in R2. We had a moment of silence. Jon Pelley was sailing his newly refit RMD boat and it was going very well. We expect to see more from him in the next events.
Ron Rhault was sailing a 25+ year old boat and he just seemed to be rolling. He was in the hunt more than not with this boat. Watch out for Ron!

The final results looked like this...

1 Chuck Luscomb 22pts
2 Al Dion 46pts
3 Dave Branning 78pts
4 Jack Ward 79pts
5 Ron Rhault 80pts
6 Jon Pelley 81pts
7 Victor Oberg 129pts
8 Bob Shluger 132pts
9 John Martin 140pts
10 Tim Stone 145pts
11 Rodger Baldwin 156pts
12 Kevin MacLellan 172pts (Did not race Sunday)
13 Phil Tonks 187pts
14 Brian Kerrigan 247 (major radio problems Sat. Did not race Sunday)
15 Biff Martin (Registered but did not show)

We would like to thank Mystic Seaport for their continued support of our event. Shannon Mackenzie and staff have been outstanding to work with. Skip Hall, who agreed to RD and Kevin MacLellan and Brian Kerrigan who returned Sunday to help with RC duties.

Thanks also to all the skippers above who make Mystic a Must on their list of events!

See you all at the Thundermug!

You couldn't have asked for better weather and fun at the Seaport. Winds all days were friendly and made for thinking tactics and tuning for boat speed. We all tinkered on Sunday to find the right shape, slot, draft as the current, chop and puffs forced us to sharpen our wits & thumbs. I felt bad for Jack Ward and his radio problems. He should have finished higher with better luck and it was great to have a Region 7 skipper find a Northeast venue. As Chuck stated earlier, Ron Rhault and John Pelly had some great speed to windward and it was good sailing to watch them roll a few skippers on a long beat. They rolled me a bunch on Sunday.
A huge thanks to Chuck who did it all. And I mean ALL. He rented a trailer to avoid us schlepping boats and gear from the parking lot as the Seaport was "under new construction."No cars on the property. Just load the trailer and walk across the street to the Seaport and unload. Reverse the process at the end of the regatta. Lunch was, again, all Chuck as he sliced rolls, pulled out fresh trays of cold cuts and fixin's and charged batteries while kicking our butts for three days. He threw out two 2nds and a 5th in the EC12 R1 Championship. Impressive....and he helped tune, rig and replace a few boats with "stuff" to get us back on the water.
To Brawner, Ramos and Shaw, Barker, Mortgu, Skerry + others. You were missed. It was a lot quieter in Mystic this year. :P :P
