Mystic Race Week 2014

Postby Chuck Luscomb » Mon Jul 07, 2014 12:27 am

Howdy Gents,

Just a little more than a month away before the next installment of the New England Cup which will be Mystic Seaport. On EC12 regatta on Saturday and Sunday August 9th and 10th will be preceded by they Star 45 Nationals on Thursday and Friday. The Skippers list is looking like we may reach 30 boats for the EC12 portion which will is pretty exciting since we have been able to sail as a single fleet for the past few years. We will be sailing with two fleets with this high a turn out. Mystic is an excellent venue and our Hosts at the Seaport could not be more accommodating. I will be posting the Skippers list shortly and the NOR and Entry forms will be posted in the next day or so. Stay tuned!

All,

We are anticipating a record turn out for Mystic this year. Not sure what the magic is but it looks like from early tally's that we will be approaching 30 boats. We don't have a cap on entries but 30 is a ton of boats. I will have a skippers list shortly and the NOR and Entry should be posted tonight for those who have been asking. Been having some e-mail issues and computer crashes which had all my data on it. All better now.

With the Star 45 Nationals preceding our EC12 Regatta, we will have a number of sailors already in town. Don't forget the Friday night river cruise on the Sabino which will take us down to the mouth of the Mystic River and back. Takes about an hour and if your not from around here, it is one of the more spectacular views of some beautiful New England coast line.

Not sure whats going on Bob but the use of all the loaner boats seems to be working. EVERYONE OWNS THEIR OWN BOAT! All the loaners are languishing with their covers on LOL.

OK, on the last stretch into Mystic with the Star 45 Nationals on Thursday and Friday. 19 boats registered for the Star and 23 for the EC12 Regatta. Humm.

Looks like the weather will cooperate with this TS moving quickly up the coast should be up and by on Wed. No effects felt here. Oh but it is still New England. Anything can happen and it usually does.

Sitting in traffic on I95 at the moment. Score board is in the back. The top 5 are as follows

1 D Ramos
2 J Betz
3 A Dion
4.D Barker
5 A Ramos

Congratulations to Dave Ramos for his victory! Very difficult regatta. Lighter breezes with some real lulls really steimied the fleet. As the breeze died, the skippers discovered that the tide was a force to be reckoned with. The starboard tack lay line into the weather mark was a mystery. As the wind died in our last race on Saturday, the boats were bucking a tide that wanted to push them over the line and the only defense was to sail away from the line dead down wind.

Full report in the next day or so.

Chuck.

Ps I did not sail.

Great regatta
Mystic never disappoints and this year was no exception. Good breeze but not too steady, just shifty enough to keep everyone on their toes, current that made you think about where you were going and weather you really want to go there, great competition, awesome friends and competition.
Brand new EC12 owner joe Siegel made the day on Sat evening. After flying his Carbon Cub down pick up his new boat Thursday we convinced him to stay and sail with us Sat. As the day went on he really started to get the hang of sailing his beautiful new sky blue EC12 and is a great new member to our class. After saying goodby we were all hanging out under the tents when we spotted a Piper Cub flying towards us. As the plane came closer Joe pulsed the throttle to say hi and goodby but the show was not over as he lit off his smoke system and cranked the cub onto a wing edge and made a tight U turn over us departing with a wing waggle and cheers from us all. Wow!! Very cool. I want a ride.
When he called later he said he wanted to do a few barel rolls but was close to restricted air space (US sub base in near by Groton) and he just had time to shoot and scoot. Looking forward to getting together with him soon.
Thanks to everyone that helped out this weekend with everything and to Chuck Luscomb our RD
Great time
Dave
