Thunder Mug Regatta

Postby Chuck Luscomb » Mon Sep 29, 2008 10:22 pm

The Thunder Mug information is now posted on the regatta page.

For this event, We have moved our sailing site from our weekly location to another larger private lake one town away. The new racing site for the Thundermug is much larger with a number of different course options. Sailing with 20+ boats in one fleet will not be a problem.

Practice and check in will be at our regular pond on Friday afternoon.

We will be hosting a cookout at my Barn on Friday Night as well as a prime rib dinner on Saturday night. You won't want to miss this one. For those with map systems, the address is 34 Elm St. Deep River, CT.

Deep River is a small New England Town with one B&B. The best and nearest larger hotel is the Comfort Inn in Old Saybrook (about 5 miles away). Some accommodations are also available in host homes but you will need to get your request in as soon as you can. One home is on 25 acres with a horse barn and another is on the water over looking the CT River. Pretty nice...

Our tentative skippers list at the moment includes,

Al Dion
Bruce Walton
Chuck Luscomb
Toby Doyle
Mark O'Conner
Mark Maise
Robert Larson
Brian Jobson
Chuck Poindexter
Kevin McLellan
Dave Van Cleef
Bill Dempsey

If you are planning on joining us, please let me know so I can add you to the list!

The Thundermug Regatta has day one completed with the morning showing moderate breezes which built through the day well into B rigs. The fleet began the day with 11 boats and as gear failures began to plague the fleet, it shrunk to 6.

The top four after Saturday are...

Walton
Leo
Dion
Luscomb

More to follow at the conclusion of racing today.

Mother Nature took pity on the poor souls who withdrew yesterday due to high winds and boats doing cartwheels most of the afternoon.

Sunday's weather could not have been more perfect. All 11 boats made it to the start line and enjoyed steady but shifty winds most of the day. 26 races were completed in two days of sailing. Needless to say, the boy's were tired but were shouting for more at 2:30pm on Sunday.

We had an upset in the bid for the New England Cup Series. Only one sailor in the standings had the points prior to this event to be within reach of Dave Brawners impressive string of first place finishes in the three of the four New England Cup events. Bruce Walton from Madison CT needed to finish in the silver to catch Brawner and he managed to not only finish in the silver, he won the event. Excellent job Bruce!

Also, Dave VanCleef who just splashed his new boat, #1975, showed the fleet his heels most of the day on Sunday gaining from his 5th place position to 2nd place. Remember this sail number folks. You will be seeing more of this guy.

A full report to follow, here are the finish positions after 26 races and 4 throw outs for the 11 competitors...

1-Bruce Walton 50pts
2-Dave VanCleef 69pts
3-Al Dion 71pts
4-Jake Leo 81pts
5-Chuck Luscomb 90pts
6-Brian Jobson 186pts
7-Kevin MacLellan 187pts
8-Chuck Poindexter 151pts
9-Rob Larson 172pts
10-Jack Baldwin 200pts
11-Bill Dempsey 238pts

Thanks to everyone who joined us!
