Except for one early morning race the wind was from the south at 3-6 depending on the time of day. The weather could not have been better. All agree the North Lawn is a far better place to sail and camp out during the regatta than the dry dock on the south end. It is walking distance to Kitchen Little, loading and unload is handy to the Lawn and there is ample parking across the main drag. The wall overlooking the dock is 10 above the water and ladder rungs up for a short cut than the ramp entry. Water traffic is almost none existent on the course, in the channel or across the river from the lawn.

Here are the EC12 finishing positions:
1. David Brawner – 46
2. Dave Ramos – 51
3. Rick West – 55
4. Chuck Luscomb – 67
5. Jack Wubbe – 68
6. Bruce Walton – 68
7. Chuck Poindexter – 76
8. Bob Greer – 82
9. Gerhard Kelter – 86
10. Brian Jobson – 87
11. Al Dion – 112
12. Jake Leo – 118
13. Doug Wotring – 122
14. Bob Kjellberg – 149
15. Ernie Freeland – 153
16. Gary Mueller – 158
17. Scott Todd – 173
18. Jerry Fernald - 204

Because the J Class is populated with a lot of EC12 people here is the Mystic spiel.

This was a gathering of the largest group of competitive J Class sailors for a Nationals I have seen. And it was competitive; as David Brawner was dethroned since the time I have known him which is a decade. Bruce Walton from the EC12 Class is the National Champion of the J Class. Not only this feat but he race an old Ranger that under his set up and tuning was the fastest Ranger many of us have ever seen. Ranger is the largest of the J boats and weighing in around 100 pounds. It was awesome.

Speaking of Ranger, Gary Mueller of the EC12 Class built a spectacular Ranger with all the special machining we have come to see from Gary’s shop. It was sailed by Team Viking, Gary Mueller, Gerhard Kelter and Jack Wubbe. It was fast and powerful. I can attest when my Shamrock was gunwale to gunwale with her I could not pull ahead or force her to windward.

I have never seen a Ranger lead a race and it happened often at Mystic between these two.

Results:
1. Bruce Walton – 18. EC12 Class.
2. Jarl Wathne – 24. First regatta for his new Shamrock. EC12 Class Champion.
3. David Brawner – 25. I think there will be refitting this winter. EC12 Class Champion.
4. Team Viking – 28. All EC12 Class.
5. Rick West – 41. Notice the break is scoring? Definitely a winter refit. Huh?
6. Biff Martin – 50
7. Bob Kjellberg – 60. The creator of the Shamrock V. EC12 Class
8. Doug Wotring – 66. EC12 Class.
9. Hal Slentz-Whalen – 68. EC12 Class.
10. Allan Kew – 73. He had five hulls and boats at Mystic.
11. Bob Sennott – 89.
12. Chuck Luscomb – 91. EC12 Class and with a borrowed J.
13. Bob Rodkey – 92. EC12 Class.
14. Daren Thigpen – 108.

It was glorious and the best ever fun Mystic visit for all. We had a great time!

Side note: Chuck Luscomb of the EC12 Class is the National Champion of the Wheeler Class and the Star 45 Class also held here at Mystic, as passed to me. I am not official, Okay?

What a super regatta. Thanks to the New England crew for such warm hospitality and a great sailing venue.I can't imagine how Jim Linville & commitee managed running a 4 fleet regatta so well.Must be Karma!
A special BZ to J Garibino & wife for the wonderful picnic.
Hope to see you folks next spring.
Ducking another hurricane-we had to cancel the Orlando regatta due to flooding.

Would it be possible to list the boat numbers with the skippers of the J class so that we may equate the photos to the various skippers.
Thank you in advance.

I am glad that the North Lawn worked out as well as it did. I had been pushing for that venue from the start. The folks from Mystic Seaport could not have been more accommodating to our every wish.

Since Jim L. and John S. will not do this event every year, I have been talking to the Seaport about using the same spot for the off years.

The plan on the table is a three day event for both EC12 and J class.

Friday- EC12s all day with three formal breaks. Mid morning, lunch and Mid afternoon.

Saturday- EC12s till noon with one mid morning break. Lunch break and then J's till days end with one mid afternoon break.

Sunday- J's all day with a mid morning break, lunch break. The regatta would conclude at 2pm to give everyone a jump to get home.

Thoughts? I am going to write something more formal to submit to the folks at the Seaport shortly so let me know what you think.

I think that was the hype after the regatta. I think also that August is a good time for the seaport and us, as there is usually nothing going on elsewhere. If the seaport can be flexible, as to weekend, we could have a date firm with us mid October for them.

The schedule is going to be penciled in at the NCR.

I will have Brawner's J class report in the section on the Schedule on the class site by noon Eastern today.

Alan Kew was kind enough to send me a copy of a video he took at Mystic. It's now posted on Youtube.

Also, Mystic Seaport posted a video from a prior year. Search Model Yacht Regatta. My guess is the sailing took place in 2004.

Okay here is another video from Alan Kew. The text is my fault. This is the last race of the regatta. You will see obstructions that normally don't come into play on your local lake. Enjoy.
