<font size="2"><b>Triangle Cup 2008 Regatta Report</b></font id="size2">
The Triangle Cup 2008 Regatta was held May 3 and 4 at Lake Johnson Nature Park in Raleigh. The weather could not have cooperated better, giving us sunny days with strong breezes on Saturday and lighter air on Sunday. Seventeen (17) skippers made it to the line on Saturday morning sailing in a two fleet P/R configuration. After four seeding heat races, the race director (John Amoroso) settled into a rhythm which resulted in 8 completed sets of two heats per race. On day 1 five skippers finished first Skip Allen (3), Gerry Cobley (2), Scott Vernon, Joe Phillips, and Bob Mersereau) under top of "A" rig conditions. One skipper withdrew.

Day two began with very different conditions. The race director chose to send the remaining 14 boats (two additional skippers withdrew) to the line to get in as many races a possible in the half day of sailing. Four skippers finished first in the 7 races completed (Chris Kakavas (3), Gerry Cobley (2), Reichard Kahle, and Bob Szczepanski). The lighter winds favored Chris Kakavas.

Special kudo's go to Reichard Kahle who recovered from losing his bow block shackle on the first race of day one. He cut open a hole in the bow, replaced the block and missed only one race (thank goodness for throw outs). Also for stick to it honors is Chris Kuhn who struggled with a new rig and other assorted equipment issues.

The bottom line is Gerry Cobley (Triangle Model Yacht Club) won the Triangle Cup Regatta for the 4th time in a row. He was closely followed by Scott Vernon (Atlanta Model Yacht Club), Chris Kakavas (Piedmont Model Yacht Clug), Reichard Kahle (Charleston Model Yacht Club), and Skip Allen (Atlanta Model Yacht Club). Bob Szczepanski tied for fifth in points but the tie breaker based on first place finishes went to Skip Allen.

The Triangle Model Yacht Club wishes to thank John Amoroso, the race committee and volunteers for all their hard work. We also wish to thank the City of Raleigh, and the staff of Lake Johnson Nature Park for their assistance.

Doug,

Don't let Gerry be the RD next year. He needs to stay on the water (Lake Cobley) and go for five until someone can knock him off properly. Scott Vernon came close.
