2018 Wisteria Cup Regatta R3 Championship

Postby kahle67 » Wed Aug 15, 2018 9:43 am

The Charleston Model Yacht club invites you to join us on October 20th and 21st for our annual Wisteria Cup Regatta. This is the Region 3 Championship so we will be racing for red chevrons. Bring your better half with you to visit one of the South's greatest cities and get a little sailing in while you are at it. Hotel reservations are going to be the way to go this year as someone has unfortunately rented 8 of the cabins and there is little chance of cancellation. What a ####!!!

I'm coming to this one too. Too bad all the cabins are booked. I might bring my tent and stay in the camp grounds. But then they do have those damn GNATS!

What a really well run regatta. Challenging conditions for skippers and Reichard as RD. One of those shifty weekends that had people changing from A to B and back again. Congratulations to Alan Perkins on 8 wins in a row. Ricky "Bring Back The Joker" Gerry dusted off his boat to take 2nd place. I am tired from my drive home so my mind might have this backwards, but I think it was Danny Thomas in third and Peter Feldman was 4th. If I got that wrong I am sorry. Lots of really great sailing by everyone including some new faces. We are so glad to have them joining the class and we encourage them to keep sailing and improving.

21 races were sailed over the weekend and we could not have asked for better conditions on Saturday with the wind coming straight down the lake from the SW strong enough that over half the fleet used their B rigs. I did not have to adjust the course once. Sunday was a different story with stronger winds out of the North creating gusty and shifty conditions. Staying in phase on the upwind legs was definitely a challenge, one that regatta winner Alan Perkins was up to finishing the weekend with three bullets in a row. Ricky Gerry had passed Alan on the scoreboard early Sunday but things went wrong for him when his transmitter fell into the lake. It was a very close regatta for the top four as you can see by the results below and I think everyone was happy to get enough races in to have three throw outs with the amount of breakages in equipment that occurred.

1) Alan Perkins 41
2) Rick Gerry 49
3) Danny Thomas 51
4) Peter Feldman 59
5) Joe Walter 74
6) Dave Linville 84
7) Scott Vernon 102
8) Richard Wiley 148
9) Liz Perkins 159
10) George Willis 184
11) Frank Ligon 185
12) Bo Jones 205
13) Henry Cerceo 216
14) Chuck Millican 249
15) Leonard Cass 267
16) Jim Donohoe 279
17) Ned Nielsen 279

Hats off to everyone, especially the RD Reichard and all the supporting staff for putting on a great weekend of racing. this event brought together a great group of skippers and families. As Joe W. stated in an earlier post the conditions were challenging with the ever-shifting winds, a few breakdowns (Sorry Peter), some heavy winds without a B rig tip (Thanks Joe) and the three guy's that battled for position seemly race after race (I'm looking to see you guys again to continue) this only added to the excitement to the weekends racing. I could go on for a bit more but I will end it here by saying See you in Dec. in FL.

I’d like to thank all of Reichard’s crew for a great regatta and it was so so good to see Ricky Gerry back. For everyone’s information, if he had not dropped his transmitter in the water he would have knocked me off my perch and won the Regatta. Well done Ricky and it just shows you have not lost your racing skill having been absence since the Maryland Nationals incident Two years ago.
Following the issues at Sun City it was fantastic racing in a fleet without all the shouting and bickering going on. I for one at the Sun City Regatta was called a ........ by a very senior member of our EC12 committee and I apologies publically if I also offended anyone else and promise to try and keep my mouth shut in future, do my turns without question if at fault, or protest. At the upcoming Nationals in PG I’m not going to get confrontentional, but just withdraw from the Championships, my heart is worth more than a stand up shouting match. We are not racing for $1m but for plaques to stick on the wall.
ALL the top Skippers must remember and be aware they are being watched by all skippers and prospective skippers ashore especially in P&R races and should count to three before opening their mouths and shouting some poor unsuspecting skipper down for something they did not do or were unaware they had done. These skippers or prospective skippers are our ongoing lifeline to an ongoing successful and well supported EC12 racing Regatta fleet. We all know who does it so let’s try and cut
it out. If a situation arises just say #** protests #+++ twice, get an achkowledgement and carry on from there. Do your turn if at fault or go to protest. Don’t get into a shouting match, it does make you look like a bully if it’s done over and over again. Cut it out, the top skippers must set an example.
Anyway, Great Regatta Reichard and well done Ricky for nearly winning but nice you let your father-in-law take the title and a special congratulations to my dear wife Liz for qualifying in her own right in the Next Champions Regatta.

Don’t forget the Florida series starts with the Villages Regatta Dec 1/2 and entries are already flowing in. Get in early and give our new Commodore John Goldsworthy support and entry numbers to get everything organized.
Thanks and happy sailing.

I'd also like to thank Reichard and the members of the Charleston Model Yacht Club for putting on a fine event at the Wisteria Cup. I had a great time and will see you all at nationals in a couple of weeks.
