Region 2 Championship at Spring Lake

Postby DBrawner » Sun Apr 12, 2015 7:59 am

Time to get the registrations flowing for this event. Spring Lake is just a block off the ocean in a great Jersey seaside town. It doesn't get much better than this. Though this venue has been host to many regattas, I believe this is the first EC12 regatta to be held here.

We're getting close to the "Roar At The Shore", so to speak. Here are the skippers that will enjoy the Jersey Shore, Spring Lake style:

Dave Brawner
Dave Branning
Jamey Betz
Bill Sysyn
Dom Bonanno
Scott Graf
Harry Mote
Roger Baldwin
Victor "Eat Mo Chikin" Oberg
Joseph Cole
James Flach
Dave Ramos
Danny Thomas
Don Barker
Ken Shaw

We have three past and current National Champion(s) sailing this regatta, not too shabby. All we're missing is Mark Rinehart & Jarl Wathne, also National Champions....

We had four National Champions sailing, unfortunately Dave Ramos will not be sailing. We'll miss him big time....

The Roar At The Shore started out more like a whimper due to predicted rains. Well they only lasted for 15 minutes, long enough for everyone to breakout their rain gear only to remove them. Like they say,, "If you don't like the weather, wait 15 minutes and it will change." Danny Thomas and Jamey Betz were battling it out until the dreaded demastings began on Danny's boat. The third time it happened was right after DB stated look out for another demasting and truer words couldn't have been spoken. DB couldn't walk away fast enough, good for Danny for being such a great sport about...

So after 15 races here are the results before any throw outs:

Ken Shaw 105 points
Roger Baldwin 143 points
Danny Thomas 86 points
Rod Woolley 195 points
Bill Sysyn 139 points
Jamey Betz 40.6 points
Dave Brawner 70 points
Harry Mote. 187 points
Dave Branning. 79 points
Scott Graff 55 points
Victor Oberg 131 points
Dom Bonanno 117 points
James Flach 92 points
Joseph Cole 145 points

Harry's boat broke after race #9, everyone is hoping he will be back on the water tomorrow. He told me he was going home to hopefully repair it. So tomorrow's forecast doesn't look promising, rain and light air. Let's hope it pass us like today's rain did.

A great big thank you goes to the entire Spring Lake crew for hosting a great event. It was wonderful to get the spend the weekend playing toy boats with my friends at such a perfect seaside venue. We look forward to this becoming an annual event on our Colonial Cup schedule. See you back there in a few weeks for the War at the Shore J Boat NCR.

Thank You Spring Lake Marbleheaders!!

The Roar At The Shore lived up to it's name on Sunday. The forecast called for rain and 2 mph wind, thankfully the weatherman was wrong. We started Sunday with the wind out of the SW around 5-6 mph, we sailed 2 series of 3 races and broke for lunch. After lunch the wind clocked 180 degrees out of the preferred SE at 5-10 mph. Jamey Betz continued his dominance, winning 4 of the 9 races, while Danny Thomas also continued his spate of problems garnering his fourth DNF from an exhausted battery. Jamey left little debate as to who was king with his dominant performance winning 10 of 24 races holding a 25 point advantage over 2nd place finisher Dave Brawner.

Aside from Jamey, DB was at or near the top most of the day. Dave Branning and Ken Shaw also had a strong showing. Sunday's race winners were Jamey(4), DB(2), Danny, Branning and Ken Shaw. At the end of the day Jamey more than covered the field, here are the final results:

1. Jamey Betz. 35.6
2. Dave Brawner 61
3. Scott Graf. 64.6
4. Danny Thomas.67
5. Dave Branning. 74
6. Ken Shaw. 106
7. James Flach. 115
8. Dom Bonanno. 150
9. Victor Oberg. 156
10. Roger Baldwin 175
11. Bill Sysyn. 187
12. Harry Mote. 208
13. Joe Cole. 230
14. Rod Woolley. 248

Everyone enjoyed their weekend at the Jersey Shore, our Region2 Director:Dave Branning has agreed to make this an annual stop for the Colonial Cup Series. Thanks go out to the race committee, Eileen & Bill Ewing, Mike Campbell, with assist from Bill Sysyn and Domenick Bonanno. Also for Rod Woolley who provided his RV. Thanks to all!!

Just wanted to thank Skip and his teriffic staff for a really fun weekend of sailing. The Spring Lake crew really made the weather men look silly concidering the forecast. Only a few minutes of rain and nice air both days. What a great sailing venue. Just have to remember the hole by the tree! ( Think it got me good 3 times)
Hope to see everyone again soon. Looking forward to the War at the Shore.

Hey Skip----can I put some yellow spots on your J?

Great regatta and a great location. Can't wait to come back to watch the J's sail there.

Here are a couple links to pictures from Judy Bonanno.
