Hail all Colonial Cup Skippers:
The last regatta in the Colonial Cup Series is the upcoming Annapolis Regatta to be held at Sandy Point on the West side of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge in less than two weeks. Currently we have a dog fight for the top places. The good news is that our leading skipper, Dave Ramos, is the Champions Regatta defending champ and automatically qualifies for the March championship. That leaves five more from our region able to make the Charleston event. Below Dave Ramos is a tight group who will all probably be registering for Annapolis to secure a chance to qualify for Champions. And, if you show up, you get a shot at current National Champion Jamey Betz and at least 4 other former national champions. Bring your A game to this one.

Here are the top ten current standings in the Colonial Cup:

Dave Ramos 68
Champ Betz 66
Don Barker 58
Mark Rinehart 46
Dave Branning 46
Danny Thomas 46
Ken Shaw 45
Harry Mote 36
Skip Hall 33
Bob Shluger 32

The weather forecast was for B rig weather and Mother Nature did not disappoint. From the first race 11 skippers were treated to great wind. Rising to a sold 20 dropping to 11 just to keep everyone on their toes but just when we thought it had died off or settled down she smiled and started to roller coaster again. We saw a bit of carnage that you would expect with as much wind we had but everyone pitched in to keep the boats on the water and sailing when possible. With the great wind there just enough shift to allow some fantastic heads up tactics and come from behind finishes. The saying "It's not over til it's over" was demonstrated time and again.

The top five skipper came out hot and battled for top honors every race. Danny Thomas soon settle into a pattern for the day failing to drop out of the top three all day and finishing the day after lunch with 6 bullets out of 9 races to take first place. Great job Danny!! Jamey Betz came out of the gate strong but suffered a bit of a hiccup just before lunch that cost him took home second place. Dave Brawner sailed until lunch with an A rig! It was wild to see #53 on a full plain down wind....wow! He changed to a borrowed B rig after lunch and the charge was on but at the end of the day took home third place.
With the forecast for even stronger winds (18-28) on Sunday, temps dropping 25 degrees and with 17 races already on the books it was decided to end it and keep the boats in one piece.

Thank you to everyone that traveled to Annapolis to sail with us we had a ball and I enjoyed being an RD for the first time. Thanks also to Skip Hall who decided to pull his boat and help me with running the races and to Dave Littleton, Doug Hutchinson and Chris Bock for hanging around cheering, laughing and having a great time when boat failures forced them to retire for the day.
Dave

A wild day at Sandy Point. Great time with lots of laughs with great folks and a bunch of tight finishes. Not one penalty turn was done reluctantly. Well done, Danny Thomas. And to Mr Ramos, you are the front runner for RD of the Year. I actually think you had more fun yesterday than anyone. You may have found a niche in this sport. PERMANENT RD. Thanks for all your work that went into the day and the time retrieving and fixing all our boats.
