Dick, when I refer to the "Clutches" of the B-fleet, I mean it exactly as intended. That is one tough group of sailors in B-fleet and it is no easy job to get out. I know because I spent 4 heats in a row in B at Palm Beach Gardens and I had a trip there this past weekend and only got out by the skin of my teeth.
In years past, there was a noticeable difference in the skill levels between A and B. Now a days, every boat in B is just one good tack away from beating any skipper in A-fleet. The difference is no longer boat speed and thumb-time. The best have got an edge in consistency that pays off in the long run, but as they say...any given Sunday...
I know that when you and I were in the same fleet this past weekend and were near each other on the course, there was no difference in boat speed. Catching you and fending off were equally difficult.
Keep sailing hard as you do. And to the rest of you, keep practicing and don't be afraid to ask questions of the top skippers. That is how you improve.
