0930 Skippers Meeting

About the Pond:

This is a privately owned pond. It is a near perfect sailing venue for RC sailing with no trees surrounding the park. The shoreline is relatively flat on most sides of the sailing areas and we will provide a dry launching area. There is no shade around the pond, bring tents. There is no power available at the venue, so charge those batteries. There will be a port a pot on site.

We look forward to welcoming everyone to this new location.

A "pending", a "tentative" and Harry Mote. This is going to be a good one. Where's Jamie, Bill Ewing and Nick?

Just got the launching float in the pond for Saturday. Not sure if the above link will get you to the photo I posted. (doesn't look like it worked. It is posted on the Chesapeake Bay Model Racing Facebook page.)

https://www.facebook.com/pages/Chesapea ... 1793166427

A few notes for Saturday.

When you exit off of Route 50 you will be on a Warrington Farm Lane which is paved. You will come to a sign that says Do Not Enter and the road becomes gravel. Proceed straight on that road. The pond we are sailing on will be on your left and there is a "road" that goes toward the pond on your left. You will come to this road before you pass the pond. This is the area we will be set up on. We have been asked to park by the pile of dirt that is there. You are welcome to back up to the pond to unload, but once you have unloaded please park on the other side of the gravel "road" closest to the piles of dirt. It is all right there. This will be a dry launching site. The forecast looks like 6 - 8 from the North East with temps in the mid 60's. Should be a great weekend.

Please let me know if you have any questions. For those of you on the fence come on register!! We are going to have a great time and would love for you to join in the fun!!

Day one of the 2013 Annapolis EC12 Regatta is on the books. Fourteen EC12 Skippers descended on Warrington Farm Pond in Queenstown, MD to via for the 2013 title. This is a brave group that is racing in the first ever RC sailboat regatta hosted at Warrington Farm Pond. How were they greeted? With cloudy skies and no wind, I guess the pond was trying to show the skippers who was boss. Don’t have wind? The best way to keep the skippers under control is to make sure you have coffee and donuts and of course an prop powered rc powerboat will entertain the skippers for awhile, thanks Jamey for bringing that along.

It took a little patience but after about an hour the wind decided that it would offer something that was sailable. Jamey Betz was hot out of the gate with a bullet the first race of the day and that is where he sits after thirteen races for day one, on top of the leader board. Five skippers managed a win during the day, Betz, Brawner, Freeland, Mote and Ramos each managed at least one win, they also make up the top five sailors at the end of the day. The wind brought it’s “a” game today…as in a being A BIG pain. It was up it was down, it was all around. The Race Director, Scott Graf with help from TR Lamb did a great job keeping the day moving and maximizing the racing with the conditions available. Teamwork and lots of input resulted in good courses that tested the skippers sailing skills and patience. By the end of the day the wind settled down to a consistent and perfect direction, allowing the pond to show off how great of a venue we believe it will be.

Being a farm on the Eastern shore of Maryland your day wouldn’t be complete without a little target practice to sight in the scopes on your rifle, right? Yup we had that too about midway through the day, all EC12 Skippers and volunteers were safe, unharmed and accounted for at the end of the day.
Most skippers had a race or two that they were happy with by the end of the day. Newcomer to the EC12 John Eger had a solid day for his first ever EC12 Regatta. His learning curve was steep and his hard work was rewarded with a pair of thirds today, on top of several other strong finishes. I think John may become a regular in the Colonial Cup and local sailing.

Tomorrow the 2013 Annapolis EC12 Regatta Champion will be crowned. The wind looks like it may bring it’s “a” game tomorrow but we will see.
We hope to have sailed a total of 24 races by 1400 hours tomorrow.

Results after 13 Races with two throw outs:
Place Name Total
1 Jamey Betz 29
2 David Ramos 36.6
3 David Brawner 37
4 Harry Mote 43
5 Ernest Freeland 56
6 Doug Hutchinson 58
7 John Eger 71.6
8 Bill Ewing 78
9 David Littleton 79
10 Don Barker 86
11 David Branning 92
12 Victor Oberg 104
13 Roger Baldwin 115
14 Skip Hall 127

The 2013 Annapolis EC12 Regatta is in the books after twenty four races were sailed. Dave Ramos managed to defend his title from last year by winning three races and scoring nothing worse than a fifth on day two. If you had to label day two of the regatta I would call it “moving day”. The skippers arrived at the pond to find wind this morning, unlike yesterday. Yet it wasn’t coming from the same direction it was yesterday, does it ever? After waiting for the wind to settle into a direction that offered a fair course the race committee ended up moving the skippers to another shore on the pond and set a windward leeward course that allowed us to complete eleven more races. The pond was once again ready to offer a challenge to its visitors. You could win or lose on either side of the course. The wind was shifty and up from yesterday; most skippers were sailing their heavy A rigs. The top three that started the day remained the top three at the end of the day just in a different order with less than 5 points separating first thru third. Ramos, Brawner and Betz really distanced themselves from the rest of the fleet with strong performances over two days of sailing. With a win in the twenty third race Bill Ewing became the six skipper to add a win to his scorecard.

The RD brought his son Spencer along today to help with scorekeeping and mark management on the water. Skip Hall decided to hone his photography skills today versus sailing. Don Barker worked hard to get his radio to cooperate in his boat, after trying just about everything he packed up his boat and assisted with some of the race committee duties while enjoying the sailing. Doug Hutchinson had to repair his forestay and miss a race but sailed well enough to improve his position overall in the regatta. Newcomer John Eger had so much fun yesterday that he came back for a second day of RC sailing and sailed very well for the tough conditions the skippers were facing. While talking to him after the regatta he spoke about some of the things he learned today sailing and it appears that he is picking the boat up quickly.

Once the sailing was over everyone lent a hand to get the pond back to its condition prior to our arrival. Thank you to everyone who assisted in the clean up. A huge thank you to Scott Graf, Spencer Graf and TR Lamb for their assistance in making this such a great regatta. John Eger provided us with a great floating dock that allowed us to have a stable dry launching area. An apology goes out to Dave Brawner for not getting the grass cut shorter so his new Sperry Topsiders would stay dry. Without the assistance of all the volunteers’ events like this would never happen.

This was the first regatta sailed at Warrington Farm Pond and from the feedback it seems to have been a success. The skippers all made a donation to a pot for a thank you gifts for our hosts. We hope it is possible to return in the future. Finding venues is always a challenge but what really removed a barrier to the use of the pond was the AMYA Pond Insurance, than you to Nick for getting the insurance processed quickly and easily.
The Annapolis EC12 Regatta plans to return to Sandy Point State Park in 2014 to be hosted October 18th and 19th.

What a great private pond and a lot of good planning went into making the venue a perfect two days down on the very large Eastern Shore farm. Perfect floating dock, convenient parking, healthy lunches and a great job by Scott Graf and son, Spencer. A lot of great guys enjoying each other over two days of tight racing. Thanks to Ernest Freeland and Dave Ramos who paved the way for us to use this superb pond for RC racing. You'll have over 20 boats next year. The word is out on this venue.

Thank you to everyone that helped to make this first event at this new venue such a great sucess.
That also goes to the skipper that really made a considerable effort to thank our host Dave when he came by on Sat and to bend over backwards to leave the location better then when we arrived.
Fair warning....Don Barker receive a Port Tack Chit with his great idea to pull the float dock out of the pond with the truck prior to putting it on the trailer. Haha such a simple idea that was staring at us all. Lol

With such a great first outing that everyone so enjoyed as can be seen from the outpouring of gratitude to get a significant thank you gift for our host David and his son Scott we hope to host more regattas here in the future and wish you will consider joining us next year.
