Hi All,
The 2013 Nor Easter is now in the record books. Newport delivered on her crazy weather once again. The forecast was for Sunny skies and winds out of the North at 10-20kts working to the NE. Well, it did that and a little more. While we struggled around the race course with our B rigs, here comes John Skerry with a C rig. Only one in the fleet. Now here is a guy who learned from his past trips to Newport. He had started with a B rig and his scores were 12-9-16 (DNF) and then with the C rig, he went 2-1-3. I am sure we will see a spike in C rig building as a result of that showing.
Saturday was also full with breakdowns of all kinds. Rigs went down not once or twice but for some, the rig went down three times. Water was making it into most every boat despite our best efforts to keep it out. The crash boat was so busy, we rarely saw Dan Crowley on the dock at all. And he was our RD! Ken Koehler had to step in and keep the fleet moving in Dan’s place. Ken was the smartest of the bunch as he left his boat and his A rig in the car. After 10 grueling races, the top three looked like this before throw outs…
1-Dave Van Cleef 29pts
2-Chuck Luscomb 32.2pts
3-Dave Ramos 36.5pts
At the conclusion of racing and after everything was packed away, some of the remaining skippers paused and sat by our cars doing what we really like to do at these things which is have a beer and visit with friends and have a laugh or two. Nice. Later, it was back home, shower and get ready for dinner at Coddington Brewery. We had 12 make it for dinner but when the forks went down, most were ready for bed.
Sunday was supposed to see the wind drop in speed down to about 10kts and start out around ENE going ESE to SE around noon. It did not do that. We set the course for what we had at 10am which was ENE as forecast. Before we could get one full race of, the wind shifted to ESE with a hint of SE right away. Well, our site does not lend itself well to sail in ESE from the dock we were on so we moved the whole operation over to the next northern dock which allowed us to set a square course with decent visibility. As racing got underway, it became clear that although most started with an A rig, we would be back into B at the next break. The wind began building around 10:30 and never really let up. In the hot seats were Ramos, Luscomb and Van Cleef but Van Cleef had some issues with his boat and Transmitter which resulted in a swap of radio equipment to start the day off. That took him off the pace as he was not able to stay in the hunt the rest of the day. That left Ramos and Luscomb to duke it out till the hard stop at 3pm. Ramos logged consistently low finishes all day but Luscomb was able to stay right with him and widen the gap slightly over Ramos to clinch the victory on what was one of the most challenging Newport Regattas in recent memory. The final scores with three throw outs looked like this…
Note: Some of the skippers below had more than their share of DNFs and DNSs on Saturday and we only got three throw outs so althought they might be deep in points, most everyone sailed a very good regatta when they were sailing. Not much separation from first place to last place.

I would like to extend a sincere Thank You to everyone who took the time out of their busy schedules to come and race with us up here in Newport.
Our volunteers were the real hero’s keeping the sailing on track both days and producing some of the best and most challenging racing in some time. Thank you to Dan Crowley, Judy Skerry, Ken Koehler and Ron Rhault for all their efforts.
We don’t have many pictures but we do have two videos of two races on Saturday which I will work to upload to our EC12 You Tube channel in the next week or so.
See you all at Stowe which will be our Region 1 Championships on June 1st and 2nd.
