Tilghman Island EC12 and JClass Regattas

Postby Dave_Branning » Fri Jul 06, 2012 4:19 pm

Skippers: Details are now in place for the September JClass and EC12 Regattas on Tilghman Island, MD. The venue was a big hit last year and, since there are quite a few JClass yachts among the EC12 fleet, we added a Friday JClass Regatta to proceed the 2 day Colonial Cup EC12 event. We will go for a Crab/Seafood Feast on Saturday night so mark this one down and come on down to the Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake. Tilghman Island is 3 miles long and 1 mile wide and is 13 miles from St Michaels, MD. The venue is a little peninsula with YC and Marina area with pool in the community of Tilghman On Chesapeake that juts out into the Choptank River...no appreciable current effects to racing. http://www.tochesapeake.com/

We have 270 degrees of open water with a floating dock and grassy frontage as vantage point choices depending upon the wind direction.
The NOR, Registration Form, Instructions and more will be available for you to download and review shortly.

Fresh from her sterling performance as last minute PRO at Mystic, CT, Judy Skerry will be our PRO for the EC12 Tilghman Regatta. We have successfully negotiated a temporary weekend contract with the New England Region for Judy's services. Judy will be joined by husband, John, who is racing with us.
So we add John's name to the swelling entry list.
REMEMBER: Deadline is August 29th.....today is the 26th and I have not heard or seen committments or entries from several of you out there who have raised your hand or shouted "I'll be there"....I have some goodies on order based upon our entry volume. :?

Tilghman Island Regatta Skippers and Guests:

Last minute details you might like to have as you prepare for the Tilghman Island Regattas for J's and EC12's.

This is the second year we have held a regatta in Tilghman, MD for EC12's. This year we added the JClass since there are some skipper overlaps and it is now a Colonial Cup event for EC12's. Your points count toward the Champions Regatta in March. We certainly hope to provide a well rounded enjoyable experience for you with open water racing, sportsmanship on the shore and a chance to enjoy each other in a sport we love. We have a very competitive fleet with skippers from Vermont, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, Virginia and South Carolina including those racing their EC12 for the first time.

We wil be fleet racing in both classes and Judy Skerry, our EC12 PRO, will be running a tight ship so make sure your electronics are ready to go so we have a limited number of holds. Skippers meeting Friday is at 10:30am for the J's and Saturday at 9:30am for the EC12's. Bring your EC12 launchers as we will be launching off a floating dock. For the J's we will all team to help each other launch off the floating dock.

If you arrive early, we have a touch pad gate to the YC and Marina on the left before the gate. The code is 2 -1 -6 -1
The Yacht Club building and pool is wide open after 9:30am but the bathroom/locker room has an "at all times" access door combo that is 5 -4 -3 and turn knob to right.

The Fleet:

Friday's JClass Entries:
Dave Brawner
Ken Shaw/Danny Thomas
Jamey Betz
Dave Ramos
Kevin MacLellan
Dave Branning/Don Barker

Saturday and Sunday EC12 Entries:
Roger Baldwin
Dave Ramos
Don Barker
Jamey Betz
David Littleton
Terry Lamb
Doug Hutchinson
John Skerry
Chris Bock
Mark Rinehart
Victor Oberg
Dave Branning
Dave Hammett

Travel:
1. For those of you traveling on Thursday or Friday and staying in the Easton, MD area and need a good tip on dinner in Easton, try the Brasserie Brightwell, 206 Washington St. or The Washington Street Pub just up the same street; both in Easton.
2. For those of you staying in the St Michaels, MD area there are some good choices for dinner. On the harbor is the Crab Claw and on the main street (route 33) there is Characters, The Big Pickle or Ava's as recommended choices.
3. For those of you staying in Tilghman, MD and arrive Thursday or Friday in time for a beer or dinner, go to Harrison' Chesapeake House and call me 410-353-3637 and I'll come over and join you if possible.
4. At all costs, when traveling down Route 33 from Easton to Tilghman (23 miles), please observe the speed limit. Going through St. Michaels is 25mph and there are deer coming and going from the woods/farms on the open road so be careful and keep an eye out especially at dusk and after dark.
5. Don't forget the pool is wide open so bring your bathing suit if you want to get in a swim after sailing.
6. If you are staying outside of Tilghman Island, we do have showers and a men's and women's locker room at our Tilghman On Chesapeake Marina and YC for you to use for a change of clothes on Friday or Saturday night. This will help those who do not want to make the drive back to your hotel/motel and stay for a no host group dinner at Harrison's Friday or Saturday night. The crabs have been great this year so, if you like crabs, we will bang on a few and they have a huge menu of other choices. Plan Ahead.
7. If you want to bring your 10' x 10' canape and camp chairs there is plenty of room to spread out.

See you soon and travel safe.

Day One of the Tilghman Regatta featered the J-Class Regatta with 6 boats. All Shamrocks with Dave Branning's Ranger over powered with a scale 50" boom. Dave was a spectator after 1 race. The other 5 boats diced it out for 11 races with Dave Ramos defeating Kevin MacLellan by five net points with Dave Brawner in third, 8 points behind. Jamey Betz, borrowed NIck Mortgu's boat and his JClass baptism was a regatta 4th including a bullet, a second and two thirds. Jamey is just a good RC sailor in all classes. Ken Shaw came all the way from Vermont to round out the top five. This was a good tune-up for the Nationals in a week. At least 4 of this fleet wil be traveling to Detroit in a few days. :D

On Saturday (today) The EC 12 Tilghman Island Regatta completed 17 races in freshing SE winds that kept us in the B sail for the day. Twelve boats joined the action.
Day One Results: no throwouts
Dave Ramos 53 points
Mark Rinehart 53 points
Don Barker 59 points
Jamey Betz 68 points
John Skerry 82 points

Forcast for Sunday is 5 -10 out of the west and Sunny 75 degrees.

We sailed 30 races over two days. A marathon of two lap windward leeward races.

Day one was B-sails and Day two started with a mixed fleet and then went to A's for the rest of the day. Dave Ramos kept the pedal down on Sunday to grab his second regatta win in three days. He won the J-Class Tilghman Regatta on Friday.

In the EC12 Regatta Mark Rinehart finished 2nd, 14 points behind Ramos with Don Barker third, 10 points from Mark.
More will be reported in the EC12 Newsletter later this month with pictures here soon. Thanks to Judy Skerry for being our outstanding PRO and to Elaine Hepkin(scoring), Louise Lamb and Claire Barker for lunch deployment. Thanks also to Mike Epprecht for scoring help and John Tochko, MIke Epprecht and Bob Roe for buoy placment, course management, chase boat operations and general go-to guys for support. Weather was terrific and everyone loved the Tilghman Island venue. Next year it's the weekend after Labor Day. Mark it down.
The Net Scores including 4 throw-outs.
Dave Ramos 50
Mark Rinehart 64
Don Barker 74
Jamey Betz 104
John Skerry 144
Dave Branning 149
Doug Hutchinson 155
Victor Oberg 159
