MYSTIC RACE WEEK 2011
Aug 11th-14th
Mystic Seaport, Mystic CT

J Class National Championships

Well, the first day of racing at Mystic with the J boats was nothing short of spectacular. The wind settled on SSW after some pretty large shifts and then built well into the low and middle teens by 3pm. Lots and lots of photos were taken so there will be plenty to share.

These boats are truly amazing. They are so powerful and gracful and when you have 8-9 boats on the line being driven by skilled helmsman, it is a sight to see. These guys are not afraid to get close to each other and mix it up.

After 6 races, the top three look like this.

1-Ramos/Luscomb
2-Brawner
3-Reno

Still lots in store for tomorrow and it looks like it will be another great day at Mystic.

Day 2 had the winds out of the West most of the time with some huge shifts that would hold long enough to get you thinking about a course change and then they would swing back. Speeds ranged in the 5-8kt range with some long periods of 10-13kts. The sun was shining bright and there were very few clouds in the skys. The courses were not as good as Thursday but they worked.

A total of 20 races were completed to finish this event. The fleet dwindled down into the single digits and the fleet was combined into one.

The finish positions are as follows

1-Ramos/Luscomb Shamrock 26pts
2-Dave Brawner Shamrock 39pts
3-Eric Reno Endeavor II 54pts
4-Kevin MacLellan Shamrock 74pts
5-Gerhard Kelter Ranger 91pts
6-Mark Fleckenstein Shamrock 100pts
7-Nick Mortgu Shamrock 119pts
8-Biff Martin Endeavor 149pts
9-Gary Mueller Ranger 152
10-Rob Hill Ranger 163
11-Colin Mosgrove Shamrock 174
12-John ODell Endeavour 174
13-Rick West Shamrock 179 (DNC on Sunday)

Ramos and Luscomb shared the boat swaping racing on Thursday. Ramos returned to Annapolis on Thursday night to attend a parents weekend at the Naval Acadamy so Luscomb completed the event solo on Friday. Unique to the J Class is the ability to have more than one skipper. The scoring follows the boat, not the skipper.

Full report to be filed shortly...

EC 12 Region 1 Championships

Day 3 of Mystic had the EC12s taking to the water. 14 races were completed with an unsettled SSW wind that kept the lead changing. 16 boats on the line made for some interesting mark roundings as the fleet stayed pretty compact.

The top 3 at the conclusion of racing were...

1-Bruce Walton
2-Chuck Poindexter
3-Chuck Luscomb

The final day of racing was a complete wash out. A drenching rain populated the Doppler Radar in Mystic and on most everyones cell phones. That was the bad news. The good news was that no one was very upset about not sailing in the rain and most were thrilled to get an early start home. Scores were tallied after 14 races WITH 2 throw outs and the final scoring looked like this. Congradulations to Bruce Walton for sailing an excellent regatta.

1-Bruce Walton 34pts
2-Chuck Luscomb 42pts
3-Chuck Poindexter 45pts
4-Rick West 60.6pts
5-Jake Leo 72pts
6-Al Dion 74pts
7-Kevin MacLellan 78pts
8-John Bottensek 79.4pts
9-Bob Greer 86pts
10-Dave Branning 91pts
11-Phil Tonks 95pts
12-Gib Losel 115pts
13-Tim Stone 133pts
14-Nick Mortgu 145pts
15-John Skerry 157pts
16-Ken Koehler 180pts

Thank you to all who made the trip to Mystic this year and made it an excellent regatta.

Chuck Luscomb,
Thank you for a super major event and super format organized in detail. It was not your fault half the J fleet did not finish the event...it was awesome to be involved with the largest fleet of J's ever to enter an event. Spectacular.

It was not your fault the EC12s were rained out on Sunday. It was one of the most competitive regional events I have attended where in most of the races a large fleet started and finished, as a fleet. I was impressed with the level of sailing and 99% of the sailors were cool and professional sportsmen.
Well Done. Hear-Hear!

Chuck,
Thank you for hosting an awesome event. I look forward to these 4 days each year. The J Boats are wonderfull to watch. It was to bad the EC12's got washed out on Sunday but it was great to get a chance to walk the Mystic Seaport Museum.

I have included the following links for Photos I took all 4 days.

I would also like to add my thanks to Chuck and his crew(Mary thanks for lunch;Kevin the shrimp were awesome) and the many others for a GREAT weekend.
Dave Brawner was the "Superman" figure. He kept us moving and RD'ed us as only Dave can;with gentle prods and a helpful pushes.
The venue was just spectacular (I finally got to look at much of the Seaport because we were rained out Sunday-even where Chuck first kissed a girl in the Old Church root cellar).
Our tour of the Charles Morgan Whaling ship was very cool and I recommend it to anyone not well versed in our history. These ships made fortunes and helped make us what we still are today as a world power.
Thank you Region 1-New England-for a wonderful regatta and hope to see ya'll soon.

Geeeze Bob...

last time I tell you anything:)

Now that the regatta has past, I can take my organizer hat off and put on my competitor hat. That was most likley the most fun I have ever had at a regatta. The weather was perfect, the sailing was out of this world and spending time with friends (except Bob) made it all worth doing!

The regatta report is going to be very long...

Thanks to those of you who came to Mystic and made it what it was.

I want to thank Chuck and all involved with the Mystic Regatta.
It was quite painful to have to leave thursday night to travel back to Annapolis for the Naval Academy Parents Weekend when leading a regatta but what a time sailing the J-Boats. These huge boats are fantastic to sail in close quarters.
Thanks again to everyone invloved and Chuck Luscomb for leading my boat to victory. Well done.
