The Champions Regatta begins next Saturday (March 13-14) with 16 of some of the best skippers in the Country. Reichard Kahle will be trying to defend his title from last year. He will be up against the top five skippers from each of the big three groups--Colonial Cup, Dixie Cup, and Florida Cup, along with Jake Leo who is the sole representative from the New England Cup. This year was hard on the guys up north as they are still digging out from that cold white stuff.

Anyway, the event is always a great chance to see some fantastic racing action and everyone who is interested in watching is welcome to pull up a lawn chair and hang out with us. Plus it is a good excuse to visit one of the Souths most picturesque cities.

I want to thank all the "Champions" for an outstanding display of sportsmanship,fairplay, and skill in very difficult conditions in Charleston. The event can be described in one word...CARNAGE!

We started with 17 boats and finished with 13 and many of then were sailing with taped up hulls and decks, patched sails, or damaged rigs. several skippers were down to their last suit of sails.

But when the wind was blowing steady at 18 with gusts to 25 mph, and I thought it best to call it a day, I was shouted down by 15 skippers who were hellbent on sinking at least one boat on the day. Thankfully that did not happen.

There are more interesting stories to tell including one involving a squirrel, but you will need to give me a couple of days to write the full report.

I'll bet a box of doughnuts that the guys in NZ would tell you that was their typical light air day.

<font face="Arial">Here's a few more photos of the Champions Regatta. The're a lot like Doc. Greer's and are mostly guys standing around on Sunday morning. The interesting thing is the time line in the lower right corner. You'll notice the last photo of the group shot was taken at 12:56 and the last shot was taken at 13:06. I took this one of the empty sailing site just befor pulling out. It's always amazed me how quickly everyone can pack up and leave.
