Mike, if you use the search feature of this forum you will find about 3 pages on the subject of batteries. In those 3 pages, there are probably hundreds of posts on batteries. There are lots of different opinions as well.

I think you will find most guys are use nickel metal hydride batteries with 2000 plus mAhs.

I have found Batteries Plus to be a great source. I agree with Joe on the 2000 mAh .I sail 5 AA to yield 6+ volts and for windy regattas 6 cells.Be sure to ask for 18 ga or heavier wire.
Many of us use the inexpensive Hobbico(R/C Multicharger) because it has multiple ports with multiple milliamp charging options.Do remember that at 50 mAh it takes 12 hours to fully charge your pack.
Change your batteries at lunch!Ask how many of us have run out of juice near the end of a hard fought regatta.
Most seem to be avoiding LiPo because of the risk of water and the batteries not getting along.Stick with Ni metal.

I found this sight a while back and it is the best deal I could find. I have purchased these batteries (below link) and they are great. The deal is two, yes two, 6.0V 2200mAh NiMH battery packs with Hitec plugs for $22.95, you cant beet that! I have also purchased some smart chargers that work really well and an upgrade 9.6v 2200mAh pack for my DX6 from them and they all work great. I highly recommend batteryspace.com for all of you battery needs. I have no affiliation I’m just a satisfied customer.

For a regatta I take 3 boat packs(an overkill X 1)and 2 tx packs.I change boat pack at lunch and watch the volts on my DX6 racing. If it goes below 9.6 I change the Tx pack.
You will quickly find the length of charge of your pack and carry spares as needed.
