Placing Sheets on Winch Drums

Postby skip241 » Thu Aug 22, 2013 9:26 am

Hey Out There!

This week I was working on a winch problem and was told that it was OK to roll a RMG winch drum with the power off in order to wind the sheets around the drum. Ever since I installed my first RMG, years ago, I was told that was taboo. Anyone want to chime in? Thanks!

I thought not a good idea. I remove the drum screw and pull it out from the shaft till I can turn it, then put it back on.

I agree with Tom. My drum has a thumb screw so I can take it off without a tool. You can put a mark on the drum to line it up to the same place you took it off after you have wound the sheet line.

A "thumb screw" can be made by 4mm machine screw(fine thread) threaded thru anything big enough to hold onto.I use a wing nut.

OMG, a WING NUT! What do you use for a suturing needle?

Seriously, I never used any fastener on the drum till I built the first system board. The angle to the bow block allowed the line a positive track on the drum and doing so added pressure to hold the drum on the axle. I never had one come off. The SB was so simple I began to use the thumb screw because of a a history of little things happening to me, (#%$@) one time only in 15 years. For that reason alone I have always threaded a winch line on the drum from the calibrated full sheet out position of the winch...just for grins.

I am always wrong when I try to correct anyone, but I'll take another shot at doing it.

RMG screw is 3mm.
