Crystals

Postby Doug Wotring » Mon Aug 02, 2004 10:48 pm

is there some way to check and see if a crystal is in good order.

I used a brand new crystal in Mystic...it worked great up to about 15-20 feet from the boat....beyond that nothing?

Hi Doug,

I assume you replaced the crystal in question with a new one which worked OK?. If it was a tranmitter crystal, the best you can do is check to see if it is tx on the correct FX. There are devices that allow you to check that the fx on the crystal is what is coming out of your radio. You can then check to see if the range is good by keeping your antenna down and backing up and seeing what kind of range you get. A bit more difficult with the new Rubber Ducky antennas since you have to keep backing up to the full range.

If it is the RX crystal, then replacing with new is the only way to confirm the crystal is bad.

Many things contribute to radio problems and I have only had a few that were caused by a bad crystal.

Good luck with it.

BR,

Chuck
