RMG Options

Postby gcobley » Thu Feb 11, 2010 2:48 pm

I have not looked at winches for a while, and noted that RMG has the 280EL rather than 280DL on their website, which I presume is a good substitute (newer, better?).

They also have spiral drums with self tensioning which I was considering. However they do not have the normal 32mm 6 turn, but only the 45mm 4 turn. This works out about the same total travel, but would be a bit faster and a bit "weaker". I wonder if the 280EL has the power to handle a 12 with the 45mm drum?

32zs6 spiral drum on the page of the same. The standard 26s that comes with the winch is a throwaway for the EC12.
Choose Options and then click on the Specifications. If you have a 280D or DL, that will be fine with or without 2.4. Otherwise, the EL is the only choice and for 2.4 use is more friendly (less set up steps).

The 32zs6 is fine, but I was looking at the self tensioning drums like the 45zs4st. There is no 32zs6st so I am wondering if anyone has experience with a 45mm 4 turn step down drum in an EC12?

Hi Gerry,
You're right, there aint a self tensioning version of the 32zs6. It's on the to do list. It's drawn and cnc code written but just haven't got around to machining them yet.

To answer the question, would the 45zs4st be ok with 280EL in an EC12. Answer is yes. The 280EL (and the older 280DL) will have no trouble handling the extra diameter. There's plenty of reserve power.

Gerry,
My boat is equipped with 280DL winch and the 45zs4st self tensioning drum. This combination operately perfectly all last summer under all wind conditions. No spring line to worry about!!

Good luck.
