Tension meter

Postby Albert Stall » Mon Sep 15, 2008 8:19 am

Hi,

I was reading the info about the tension meter and I'm intrigued by the design of it.

Does someone have a plan for making one?

If yes, could you send me a copy of the plan or advise where I can buy a plan?

Appreciate it,

There's a picture of one here. Looks simple enough to make.

You could calibrate it with some weights and you're ready to go. Or just mark points relative to your own specific boats and don't worry about absolute measurement.

I believe I used a ball point pen spring on it if that helps you any with materials. Keep it light in weight.

Al,
If one of your classmates have a copy of the EC12 Manual there is a drawing to make one on page 141A. I am not in a position to scan it for you right now.

Most homemade ones are based in wood. I like Lexan for mine.

You can also buy them from Mike Zellanack and his parts are listed in a catalog on the Suppliers List on the class site.

Thank you for your responses. I am a creative person and as a result of your suggestions, I have designed one based on the standard. I made a proof of concept prototype and it works-now onto the final version.

But I do have a question....what is the highest reading necessary? Is it 3lbs, 4lbs?

I have 6 but now used that much. There is a page in the Support Equipment for the Tension Meter and a couple of photos.

Even when sailing in "survival" conditions as in 2007 "Gone with the Wind" 20 knt plus I do not put in more than 5 Lbs.
Agree with Rick;look at your mast, listen to your sailmaker's recommendations, and compare to classmates at the lake.

Does anyone have measurements for the tension meter that is on the building page? The one in the manual for the EC 12 is larger than the one on the building site.
Thanks,

Val sent me an email and told me the print for the tension meter is in the optimizing book.
Thanks Val

Calvin,

I take it you did not look at the plan in Optimizing. I made that Optimizing one and am happy with it, but it is the big one. It is 8 1/2 inches high. From memory, I think the small one is about 6 inches high.

I made mine as a sandwich of 1/8th inch balsa sheet and 2 pieces of 1/64th plywood. It is pretty light.

Scott,
That is the one I made. I made it out of .060 sheet styrene. I seems to work great. I am making a new Vector rig for my boat and will need it to set up the rig. I will know more on how well it workswhen I get to the point of setting it up. It seemed to work well when setting the scale.
Thanks,

Calvin,

Who do you sail with up in Warwick? Do you sail with the group at Rodger Williams Park?

Chuck,
Yes, I sail at RWP with George and Val. I just got back into sailing last year after a 10 - 15 year layoff while my son went through scouts.
