Sail Rake

Postby EdGelina » Tue Oct 30, 2007 7:21 pm

My boat has a "level deck" while I notice that many are "up one-degree" or so. I see some masts raked back 1-degree, some 2 and some perpendicular to the deck....Is there an optimum mast-rake for my level deck?

Ed,

I am not sure why there are not more responses to this question so I will take a stab at it. Not all boats are exactly the same. If the boat is sailing well now and you have a good mix of boats to compare speed with, try moving your mast forward and see how it effects your boat speed. If the results are not better, move it aft of your original setting. My mast is close to if not 90degrees from my deck. My boat is not fast with the mast raked back but I have been passed by other boats with a visually noticable rake aft.

The short story is, try it and see what happens.
