The building site calls for the mast to be cut to 71 7/8 inches. It looks like the mast crane is flush with the top, and the mast base insert is flush with the bottom.

I am using a mast insert that extends out the bottom of the mast by about 1/4 inch. This brings me to the question. What does the rule say about mast height? Is it a measurment from the deck to the top of the mast? Is it from the top on the mast step to the top of the mast? Or is it just the length of the spar itself?

I believe that class rule 8.1 quoted below will answer your question

"<i>8.1 Maximum mast height (inclusive of mast crane) shall not exceed 72" (1829 mm) above the deck</i>."

The reason the building site calls for 71 7/8 inches is that most mast steps are 1/8 inch thick. If you are using an insert that is 1/4 inch you will need to shorten your mast accordingly. Keep in mind that the pin on the bottom of the mast will go into a hole in the mast step and will not need to be included in the measure.

All totaled up, the mast cannot be higher than 72 inches above the deck, EXCEPT that you can attach a windvane to the top of the mast that is not part of the measurement.
