Tape for sail seams

Postby georgeb2200 » Mon Oct 27, 2014 8:33 pm

Has anyone found a good sail seaming tape and a source to purchase a roll or two?

In making sails the seams are joined with double sided sticky tape. I've used several types:
1. A 3M that was just the glue material, 0.25" wide. No part number on the roll. Very difficult to lay down, perhaps the roll was old.
2. A 0.25" Venture tape with some sort of carrier material coated both sides with sticky. It puckers somewhat after time, especially on CPM505 sailcloth.
3. A 0.375" tape from Sailrite #129 "for canvas...that bonds well with coarse canvas products". It behaves much like Number 2.

Midwest is out of stock on their tape, unknown brand and specs.

Maybe someone has had experience with the double sided tape sold by Sails ETC in UK. Very easy to buy products from them and have them appear on your doorstep. Very reputable supplier.

Hit Sails and then Sail Making Materials.

I don't know how this stuff is, but it's another option.

Let us know how you make out. I"m about at the stage to have a go at making my own suit of sails as well, and see what happens.

Once upon a time I built sails with this stuff (super Tack). No need for sewing if you keep them out of extreme heat in your vehicle. I still use the stuff for making hatch cover flanges. Not very forgiving with Tri-spi material. Once it sticks there is no going back. http://www.duckworksbbs.com/sailmaking/tape/index.htm
