Tower for main sheet

What is the current wisdom on a tower for the main sheet fair lead?

That is: a tube or such that raises the exit point for the main sheet so that when close hauled, the force on the main boom is more horizontal.

With the fair lead on the deck, the force is almost directly vertical and tends to close the leech.

What say ye?

Fran,
I do not see that many mainsheet posts in my travels. I would not be without mine. Coupled with a spring vang I do not need to sheet vang anymore by pulling down of the boom, as you mention.

The CF wrapped tube is very strong and has only broken when I have forgotten to lower it when shoving the boat into the travel crate. So, I carry a spare. Once I was hit just right that cracked it but finished the race ok. It takes about 5 minutes to change it.

The chock is very secure and allows no movement but in and out for height adjustment. The two grommets are for water protection.

Adjusting the height I can tune the main and still have it remain so to within an inch of centerline.
