Does anyone know of or have a new or good used Rinehart Rudder? The rudder post diameter is smaller than RMD.

The lastest hulls produced today need a rudder with consistent thickness along the leading edge from top to bottom. When Rinehart was making rudders the hulls were fatter at the bottom trailing edge of the keel. I am not sure if Mark ever built a new rudder mold for the latest hulls so be careful.

Holy Cow!!!!

I knew I kept that box of old molds and parts for something!

Chuck, I have a Rinehart rudder mold he made for me for the previous EC12 hull molds. It uses the smaller rudder shaft. It is not one of his custom rudders with the concave fishtail blade. If you would like one, I'll be glad to make you one. The only cost is that it has to be purple. That's the only color gelcoat I have on hand.

Let me know what you want to do.

Please be careful presuming the molds and/or rudders coming from them will fit other manufacturers hulls. Back when I was making rudders, there were two distinct style of transom details associated with these boats. I made two different rudders to address this. I had a rudder that fit a Brawner 95 Standard hull and a rudder that fit a Robin(Skip's) 95 standard hull. Skip's had a longer, more angled top to the rudder. It would not fit a Brawner or vice-versa. Neither fit many of the older manufacturer's hulls very well at all.

Chuck, you inquired about a Hickman hull. I would bet that Skip's rudder doesn't fit it. I don't mean to be a party pooper, just don't want to see time and effort spent on something that isn't going to work. I recommend you all measure the profiles of the rudder cavities you need to fit prior to making anything.

I appreciate the help on this.

I have a Robin hull from Skip and have seen the differences you describe. The Robin rudder will not fit (without modification)the Hickman boat. The post diameter is correct and the width of the rudder is correct and mates well with the trailing edge of the keel but the shape of the top is not correct.

The rudder I have on the Hickman boat was modified from it's original shape to conform to the function of the current rudder shapes. It was not well done and it is not wide enough where it mates the trailing edge of the hull.

My thought was that rather than build a new rudder from scratch, I could modify the rudder that I have on the Robin to fit the Hickman by re-shaping the top to suit and purchase a new rudder from skip which I know will fit his hull.

Sound like it will work?

A rudder how to was posted in this forum not too long ago. He built one from scratch using balsa and glass.

Sounds like a plan. Modify away, but be careful as the rudder is hollow. Grinding away at the top may expose the inside of the rudder. Good luck!
