Houtz to lead ballast

Do the 6-32 ss cap machine screws mentioned in Delta build site work as well with the high torque expected with a RMG on Houtz mount directly mounted to the lead?

Yes s/s machine screws work great. I have built around a dozen boats with the Houtz mount without one failure. Just be careful drilling the pilot holes into the lead. Go slow and clean the drill bit very often. The bit will sieze and break before you know it. Ask me how I know!! [:D]

Seems like I read somewhere that it is easier to drill "frozen" lead - put it in the freezer or outside in the winter cold to cold soak. I think I tried it a few years ago and found it to be true.

I have used a progression of drill bits to get to an "oversized" hole and then use bronze inserts that are epoxied into the lead. It makes it very easy to remove the cap screws! I had tried tapping the lead with the Houtz mount but found it worked loose after a few "heavy" days. My inserts have been though hell and have not budged! You can always use a dremel type tool to "undercut" the lead so there is no way for the epoxy to ever come out. DB

I am going to use an RMG on a HOUTZ mount. That appears to be a really good idea. Where did you find/get the bronze inserts that was used on your mount..??

Irish
Try the local Home Depot or Lowes. Sometimes they are in the "specialty" drawers at the fastener area. Both stores carry them here. Just ask your friendly sales clerk for help. If you don't get it then head for the other store. Good luck

I got mine at the hobby shop. They were a Du-Bro product. They have them to match all the cap head screws sizes. I used 5/32 head ...I think 3/4 in in length.

I lied ...LOL the screws I used were 10-32 thread with a 5/32 cap head and they are only 1/2 in in length. I knew if I tried to do it by memory I'd "screw" up! Sorry!
