The EC12 Class and all of model yachting has lost its brightest star.

David passed suddenly of a heart attach at his home just one day after finishing second in the Roar at the Shore regatta. The news was met with complete shock and disbelief by all who knew him.

David dedicated countless hours to the EC12 Class for over 25 years. He was a hull manufacturer from 1999 to 2004. His DB Yachts hull was used as the master to secure the Class-owned mold program. His annual Pour Parties were a favorite of Region 2 skippers and many skippers drove hours to come to a party to have the lead poured in their boat or to learn building and rigging tips. One of these parties got serious as they proved that an EC12 could be built in 24 hours.

David was a champion sailor, including three National Championships in the EC12. He also gave his time to run countless regattas in multiple classes, from one-day fun regattas to race week events with NCRs in several classes. His CESS Pool racing format was a hit for many skippers. His local sporting goods store stocked extra supplies of Ping Pong Balls just for him.

David also served as AMYA president from 2010 to 2014. In his role he helped stabilize the AMYA financially and oversaw the modernization of the AMYA website.

At every regatta David attended, as a competitor or race staff member, that event was made better by his humor, his smile, his camaraderie, and his sportsmanship. David would always lend a hand to any skipper in need. Sometimes he would even miss a race because he was fixing another skipper’s boat so that they would not miss their next race.

We have surely lost our brightest star, a mentor, and a wonderful friend. Our hearts go out to Lisa, his wife, and to Andrew and John, his sons.

Fair winds and a following sea, David.

A big loss to our class and radio sailing. Dave was a huge contributor to the growth of the class and in the development of the 95 Standard leading to the class mold development. A talented and personable individual who is deserving of all the accolades that will come his way. Condolences to Lisa and the boys. Your father was a good role model for you as well as other skippers. He will be missed.
God speed, Dave.
