Making the event convenient to the US EC12 population is not likely to be a prime consideration. As the current head of the class here I will be responsible to the event wherever it will be held, but the decisions to location and other matters will come from a panel of the USA, NZL, AUS and GBR. I intend to invite CAN, FRA and SWE in also.

The location has huge implications in lieu of recent international restrictions placed on baggage. We have been able to carry two pieces at 34 kilos each and this is down to 20 now. US domestic travel will not allow an EC12 as baggage and the rates otherwise are steep and should be avoided.

The time of year in the northern hemisphere is critical. There are windows for almost any part of the country because it is so large in area. October and November have the largest window.

International competitors will be coming here on holiday and sailing will be the prime reason but not the prime attraction for the number of days expended.

Sailing time is a consideration. However, length of days is a critical choice, as we have found out in this country. Too many days are stressful to the competitors and horrendous to the event staff. More than three days of active sailing with four days on site is not likely to happen.

The size of the fleet is part of the sailing time considerations. I think that is safe to say that if there were no restrictions we would have four fleets in a heartbeat and I personally feel this would be a lack of consideration to the international community. We did four fleets one day at Disney 2005 and it is likely to be the last.

12 Discussions will host the private discussions on the forum, as it did for the NZL event. I am open to when they start but certainly no more than in six months from now.

Please consider the airline connections to a venue. Orlando looks good on ANY airline.

I sailed in the 1989 nationals at Newport, I think it was around the September time frame as we still had warm weather. The venue was sailed at Ft. Adams State Park which is a short distance from the Museum of Yachting. Tied up there was (I think) 12 US55 and the J boat Endeavour (most impressive). The sailing site was tidal with lots of wave action generated from passing boats, making the course quite challenging. However, the "cottages", the city of Newport and the yacht harbor is a very interesting place to be, with a number of full size 12's moored in the harbor as well. Maybe arranging a race on the full size 12's (Yanks vs. the Brits, Kiwis, and Aussies, etc.) would be fun. One drawback I see is the time and distance required for our friends from down under to travel. Just a thought.

Not that this has anything to do with it but November is the peak of shrimp season in Charleston. The Wisteria Cup Regatta has been scheduled in the fall lately to take advantage of the at the dock prices for our Frogmore Stew cookout.

The dates I don't think a worry for us from down under with time so far away to plan ahead. I think we should slot in to the US schedule as you all did into ours.

I think maybe the "Novemeber" may be because that's when we had it here. Personally as long as it's warm and the winds fair whatever suits. [8D]

The idea of some sailing on the "real deal" as well spins my wheels[:)] I wonder if KZ 7 will be avail??[:D] Oh yeah and no ***** cats allowed either[:p]

My vote would be for one of Doug's suggestions. Along these same lines, and not trying to add any confusion to this topic, but is there any interest in brining back ''The mini-Americas'Cup'' series that used to be raced for in Newport, R.I? With such great distances being travelled by some competitors, a couple more days of racing would be a big bonous, espcially at an historic site like Newport.

Just Curious: Why a November Date?

My Opinion: I think a West Coast Venue although conveinient for those from the land where the toilet water swirls backwards.....I think will end up "costing" US participation.

The San Diego Site is a great location and I have sailed there.....however look what happend when the nationals were there.

I would put my vote at any East Coast location with Charleston being up there as a location in the middle of the US class population.

If not tied to the Nov. Date?

Newport News.
Newport (30 boats on the water....and charter 3-4 real 12's for a full day of racing) [:)][:D]

Thanks for your icon consideration but you do not want to be in Seattle the first of November. Likewise, while we would love to side tie 6 or 7 52 footers to the Cloud 9, the Meadows anchorage is empty for a reason at that time of year.

There are three venues in consideration at the present without input from the international community:
Charleston, our overloaded best venue with full class management.
Disney World at the venue for the US Nationals for 2005 with full class management.
San Diego with management by the Argonauts and the holiday attractions of Disneyland, Los Angeles and the San Diego area.

About this time next year we will nail this down. It does not matter to us but it will have to be November friendly in the northern hemisphere.

Don't mention Seattle to Rick [:p][:p][:p]

From my perspective travelling from NZ whether it be somewhere like San Diego or Jacksonville makes little difference except for a longer and slighly more costly plane ride(s). The on ground costs should be the same (he hopes[;)]) i.e rental vehicle, food, accomodation and the copious quantities of amber liquid.[:o)]

Flying into the US from NZ is either LA or San Francisco. LA of course makes San Diego look great with a short drive from landing to venue area.

Entering via San Fran also makes the Delta MYC a short drive a way as well.

The Customs experience is the same either way (difficult[:(!])

The pennies area lready going into the jar - roll on the next big one[:D]
